Ryan Coiner, who just turned 23, is the leading scorer on 1. Union Berlin- a North division Regional league (the equivelent of English League 1), or the 3rd highest division in Germany after BL1 and BL2 Ryan has 5 goals in approx. 10 full games played. So a good strike ratio so far. Especially good considering his team has only scored 13 total goals (so he has scored around 40%), and he is the leading scorer (2 other players- only one a forward- with 3, and 2 players with 1) None of Ryan's goals were penalties... 1. Union Berlin is in the relegation zone, but given Ryan was an off-season acquisition (he scored a lot of goals last year ONE DIVISION BELOW CURRENT), and he is still adjusting to the league/team- his production is quite good, I'd say. It looks like he belongs at this level, and indeed, could press for BL2 within the next 2-3 years. BTW- Overall, he has 10 goals for 1. Union Berlin this year...5 in League Cup matches (he musta exploded against some weak team) * Last I checked, dotcom Mason on Elversberg had 5 goals also this year. So a neck-n-neck battle for German D3 YA scoring champ. Traditional champ van Buskirk is now in BL2 w/Erfurt (and not playing much)* Anyway, Ryan is someone for us to keep an eye on. OK, maybe not the 2nd coming of Gert Mueller, but a great story nonetheless (another Yank out of nowhere making a good living in Europe, and doing us proud). There is a sliver of chance this guy could hit BL before career out also...that would be something... Continued good luck Ryan....
According to Ryan, he has also had three goals called back. The goals were called back for apparent fouls, which did not occur according to him and also media reports. So his total would be 5 goals (not including 3 called back) and 6 assists in the 10 regionaliga games. Although, he just turned 25 (Kicker.de has his birth date wrong) I think he would make a good 2. division player. The problem is his team really sucks, particularly the midfield. Imagine a Conor Casey without getting any crosses and without receiving passes and Coiner having a better touch. (I have seen both play several games). He also will have a German passport (his Mom is an East German), so it would be easy to imagine him going to play in Holland or else where if no buys him after the next year. Remember that is was Jurgen Klinsman that got him over to Bielefeld. The problem was that once he got over there, the coach was immediately fired. Final point, he has almost half the goals of the bottom level team and most of them were created by himself. He has alot of talent, but is in a poor situation. Neverltheless, I'm willing to bet that he comes within the top three of the scorers in the north division.
You mean EIGHT goals not five. He already has five. The passport definently helps with the new rules coming down the pike. Is he left footed? If so, I think that is also helpful (a bit).. If he has 6 assists, that would mean he's been involved in over 80% of his teams offense (are you just including league games). If so, that is a (basically) unheard of stat (being so high)...how do you know about the assists- do you watch the games? I've never heard of a player involved in 80% + of his team's goals before. Not saying its not possible...just never heard of it.
We are friends. And yes, I am only talking about league games, other games do not really mean anything. Although he did score against Bayern Munich (probably the only American ever to do so.) Dave care to comment on that one?
Every player says that . That bet would be too risky for me . There are 6 players with eight or more goals (of course assits aren't usualy counted in Germany, so i can't say if you would have won without extensive research). And finaly my usual team name correction: Damn, i feel like i am fighting against windmills, but... *cough*1. FC*cough* You can't leave out the FC. Never. It's not possible. It's even grammatically wrong.
Well, maybe you ARE onto something. According to the game report today (0-0) draw, 1. FC Union Berlin had THREE GOALS CALLED BACK for fouls, one from Coiner (another set-up by Coiner). Of course, this is according to their website http://www.fc-union-berlin.de/saison.php?content=spielplan_details&id=1745
Yeah, what makes it worse is that some of the fans see it as a West German conspiracy against them( the American??). I certainly don't buy into that for a second, but the number of goals called back does catch one's eye. Any ideas?
