Arnoux is less surprising than Peterlin, as he was an offensive force for the past two years in college, and would have been a high draft choice if he had signed with MLS. That said, I'd be pretty surprised if he plays much for the first team anytime soon.

Or is could be that Everton's opening of an academy and scouting network in the US is actually paying off; that they've seen and identified talent and are willing to give them a shot at a higher level. Several European clubs have opened or have expressed opening an academy or expanding their scouting in the US (and North America) but Everton seem the most ambitious. Everton, it appears, has a plan. I'm eager to see how this pans out for all parties.

I'm conflicted on this one. I'm super happy for cody, I saw him play a few times with wake and he looked legit.

But at the same time, it's another young prospect bypassing MLS. Though, at least he's bypassing it for an EPL team, I would have been much more upset if he had gone to norway/sweden.

has anyone figured out the Work Permit issue? I mean, clearly, Everton thinks he'll get one. Does he have a Euro passport?

Nope, not even close. Has nothing to do with the academy or scouting network(per se) in the US but about connections. I'll add more in the next post.

I'd recommend you get Graham Smith as your agent and you'll have a decent shot at a trial w/ Everton if you're a decent player.
Seriously though, Graham is the agent for both Peterlin and Arnoux, Graham is mates w/Moyesie and the Everton staff and they have no problems taking player recommendations from him. I believe it started when he got Stuart Holden a trial with Everton after Stu left Clemson. Stu didn't get an offer from Everton but parlayed that trial to another one w/ Sunderland and got his offer from there. It's all about what connections your agent has and Graham's got decent connections in England.

I was well aware of the Graham Smith connection to Moyes and Everton. I knew he was President of First Wave Sports Marketing. That's no secret. I was merely speaking about Everton in general and their master plan of setting up shop in the US. Everton's been on the prowl. They are out there being seen which i think is a testament to their committing og looking for North American talent.

I'm all for European clubs setting up some type of acadmey in the US, if anything to help our kids develop. But would the issues of wp's be a problem?

I know Crystal Palace has an affiliation with Crystal Palace Baltimore where kids can go over to England and vice versa but wp issues still apply if anyone from USA wants to go over to England. Unless you only play in reserve games.

Derby County have a partnership with Michigan Wolves.

    The USA/European connection is growing.

    1. Any hint of how long this guys contract is?

    2. Everton are getting these guys for free. They aren't paying them that much for EPL standards and they get to see if they work out. They look like geniuses if they do. This is basically what English clubs have been doing with Ireland for a while (Kevin Doyle for 50,000 pounds-basically free).

If Everton end up selling Cody for 250K to a Championship club they've basically cut their losses.

Hopefully he goes through the rest of pre-season with the team and gets loaned down a league 1 or championship side.

All good then. Without a doubt Everton are making their presence and affinity for US players show.

Re: Cody Arnoux -> Everton FC?

After getting over the initial elation at a Yank signing at Everton, I'm thinking this signing may not really be a big deal. Cody will most likely play on the reserve squad (regardless of Everton's striker situation, which isn't great), and if he is lucky enough to stand out, may parlay his opportunity into a deal with a CCC-calibur team. If he really plays well, he has a shot at the first team. I'm going to guess (based on the Peterlin contract) that Cody's deal is also for only one year.

So I wonder if the opportunity at playing for an English team, slim as it may be, is better than getting serious minutes in the MLS. The competition in the reserve league is not going to match what he would see in MLS.

Moyes is just looking for the next Brian McHeader. His mancrush on McB is unseemly.

So he signed a 5'10", 160 pound kid?

Maybe the guy will be the second coming of Joe-Max Moore, which ain't too shabby.

He will grow another inch. Which puts him at McHead height. Certainly he will bulk up.

This needs to be underlined and saved when people want to run with the idea that the quality of the club that signs you indicates the quality of the player. Connections are massively, massively important - they aren't the worst way to evaluate players, since the recommending person has a reputation to uphold, but it's also not the best. Clubs with a lot of money can give a kid a contract on a recommendation and a decent week of trialing, but that means little in itself. European clubs are not perfect talent filters, as is shown all the time.

As for Arnoux, MLS would have done well to get him, but I think Opara and Bone might be the bigger catches from that team. I hope we'll get to see one or both of them stateside. Arnoux, meanwhile, has a great opportunity, and I hope he can make the most of it.

Re: Cody Arnoux -> Everton FC?

David Moyes spoke about this yesterday at a fans event in Seattle according to a poster on an Everton fan forum.

He said both players had matched up well in the trial with our reserve team players and showed a lot of potential albeit with some rough edges.

He doesn't see them making the first team this year but believes they have the raw ingredients to step up after a year of playing pro-soccer with our reserves.

Everton have also got at least 10 US junior teams signed up to the "Everton Way" coaching system and the best of these players got taken over to train with the club when they can.

Everton also had a show in Canada called "Soccer Dreams" it was a shitty show production wise but the winner got a contract with Everton. I think the kid that won injured his knee and isn't over there yet. Everton were tracking the kid even before he won the show. He had trials with Everton before the show started.

Yeah, there's no way these guys will get any premiership action this season. But if they play well in the reserves........I don't see why they couldn't get a look in League Cup or early FA Cup matches. Everton aren't exactly a deep squad, especially up front.

I'm shocked that Cody got picked up by Everton. I wouldn't have been shocked if he'd gotten picked up by Copenhagen, but Everton seemed like a stretch.

But hey, fantastic for Cody. Absolutely nothing bad can come from training with Everton for a year, even if you don't get any games. If the absolute worst that can happen is that he gets dropped by Everton, and comes back to MLS? That's still a win all-around.
