I bet you at some point later this year, the news regarding the Cosmos will be official. They will be Number 20. All other consortiums, step aside. You won't stand a chance.
Manchester United legend Eric Cantona will make a sensational return to football as the director of New York Cosmos. The cult US team are on their way back to the MLS and are determined to revive the showbiz flavour of the side that shone in the 70s and 80s. Cantona, who has distanced himself from the game since his abrupt retirement from United in 1997, revealed he was delighted to take the opportunity. He said: 'I am very honoured to join the legendary New York Cosmos. It's a big project, a wonderful project. The Cosmos are very strong, beautifully made, with a great past. It's kind of a mix between football and art. 'I will do everything I can to help us first find our way to regain the No 1 position in the United States, and then for us to become one of the best clubs in the world.' The Cosmos has a large youth academy after acquisitions of clubs in NY and LA (LAFC). So, it is certainly conceivable that he is initially doing work with the youth clubs. At least on the LA side, many of those players are getting time with youth national teams and will form a pipeline for some future MLS talent. If that is the case, then the hiring of Chris Klein may have caused him to look elsewhere because Klein is effectively handling for the Galaxy what Cobi could be handling with the Cosmos.
Well here is more proof that Becks is going to be part owner of the Cosmos. If hiring one of his mentors and a former "#7" in "King Eric" doesn't spill the beans nothing will.
Steve Goff reporting today that the Galaxy have hired Curt Onalfo as our new assistant coach to replace Cobi. Not too bad. Replacing one '96 original with another... Report also says that Onalfo will be in charge of the reserve squad. I don't like Onalfo as a head coach, but I think he'll be a good assistant coach.
In a way I'm kind of disappointed with this. I wasn't bothered by Cobi leaving since I don't think sentimentality should play a role in hiring coaches, but I dislike the old-boy network too. Sarachan loses his job so we give him a job as an assistant. Onolfo loses his job so we give him a job as an assistant. I'd have rather hired someone new. Maybe one of those guys will leave when/if Berhalter becomes a full-time coach.
