Remember "the Nick Lima role"? Out of soccer at 31 Earthquakes Defender Nick Lima Announces Retirement from Professional Soccer
We in Austin had him in the latter half of his career, when Wolff was playing the old Berhalter system. Lima was perhaps the most persistent practitioner of the horseshoe of sadness. Great athlete, skilled, but soooooooo cautious. I found it frustrating.
IIRC, it was actually "the Tyler Adams role" originally but after he went down with an injury GGG basically cut/pasted it onto Lima.
My thoughts of Lima: strong on the challenge, descent speed, he lacked field vision. Technically, he kept his game simple, maybe a bit too simple.
No the role started with Lima who GGG started in his first 2 USMNT matches over Reggie Cannon. Every knowledgeable USMNT watches was dumfounded that GB not only started lima over Cannon, but Cannon did not get a single minute in that January camp.
Cannon was a wide player and couldn't do the rotate into D mid part. Berhalter took a lot of flack for that but many coaches used it before him and since including Poch when he had Jedi do it. It was sort of a waste with Adams (whose coach at RBL) played him in that same role at times. GB figured out that his Pirloesque fantasy would go unfulfilled and moved Adams to where he's best soon after.
How do you know Cannon could not do that? It is not some huge challenge to move central when your team has the ball.
Were you really dumfounded that Reggie Cannon did not start in the January 2019 camp? Reggie Cannon? I doubt anyone was. It was Berhalter's first camp and a ton of new players. Cannon had only debuted a few months earlier. He was hardly some set in stone dude. Your obsession with 2019 is as weird as your obsession with anything German.
He was for basically all of 2019 except one window in March, IIRC. This is conveniently forgotten when the weird criticisms of going on 7 years ago keep coming up, but if you actually go back, people weren't crying so much for Adams, who was hurt, but guys like Alfredo Morales.
At some point with Berhalter long gone from the USMNT maybe people can stop being upset about call ups from 2019.
We once went thru the exercise of who was actually available at RB in that summer of 2019 for the Gold Cup. . This was before Dest had committed and Scally had emerged. There were injuries also, including Yedlin. Right back was a problem position for sure. .............................Cannon and Lima were the two Berhalter looked at in January camp (when we beat both Panama and Costa Rica comfortably) and stayed with the group for a while. If I remember, Dest committed prior to the Nations League. The page turned.
