"We barely qualified to the WC" but in the end we did. And so did Mexico and Canada who didn't even get out of their group. But then they'll say that Mexico and Canada were in much tougher groups than us and if so then if we were in those groups we would of qualified there too since we are better ("the best CONCACAF NT with the best talent" is what US fans claim) team out of Mexico and Canada. Nations League and Gold Cup proves this. All in all we got as far as our talent can take us. QF would be nice but Netherlands is just better than us.
True but not quite the same situation as an MLS coach being appointed full time. Plus the rules can vary. I’ve seen someone making fun of Berhalter for being bald while advocating for John Brooks.
Okay but your original point was to support "Foreign > Domestic" whereas Callaghan is evidence against that given both he and Gregg are domestic... especially considering BJ was even more "Merica coded" (college football look) than Gregg who is a bit more "effete Euro" despite the sneakers and bounce passes, having spent plenty of time in Dutch cafes. Either that or you're just wrong about how likely USMNT fans are to body shame pudgy national team coaches given both Callaghan and Poch never really got that treatment. Now you're going with another "making fun of Berhalter" example, which suggests not necessarily "Foreign > Domestic" but that some people just don't like Gregg (unlike BJ or Poch or Brooks), whether for rational or irrational reasons... in the case of anyone advocating for John Brooks in recent times we can assume which of the two it is.
I could pull out other examples. Fans liked Bradley and Arena at times too but I also saw commentary on their appearances in a way I didn’t see with Klinsmann. I think there’s a bit of a Euro shine at play.
My line was he looked like the project manager on the build of my new house. Guy sure did have the US attack rolling in the 2023 Nations League, though.
Isn't goalkeeper where that one "what if our best athletes played soccer" ESPN article back in the day had Dwight Howard?
Berhalter on the huge crowd and warm reception: "I think there's an undercurrent online and in the Twitter-sphere, Instagram-sphere that doesn't represent reality necessarily." "The reality is that people were very proud of and very supportive of my time (with the USMNT)." 1877902238972072236 is not a valid tweet id fake news 1878106553988919684 is not a valid tweet id 1878113144347758655 is not a valid tweet id
Except this is actually real not "Gregg defenders --> their own imaginations" cringe meme stuff... 1878419944943010186 is not a valid tweet id And if you think that's bad you don't even want to know about the abuse Kai Havertz’s wife Sophia is getting right now... lol 1878462252174491743 is not a valid tweet id
It's usually a bad idea to keep a coach for 2 cycles. A big reason for this is the players stop listening to them. You need fresh blood, fresh ideas. A coach has to do exceptionally well to even consider repeating. Arena 2006: Mistake, although certainly defensible Bradley 2014: Mistake Klinsmann 2018: Mistake Berhalter 2026: Mistake How many times will the USSF commit the same mistake?
Not sure I’d call any a mistake. Hard to say Arena didn’t deserve 2006 after reaching a quarterfinal, and the next three were all fired before being given the opportunity at a second World Cup. Perhaps one or more of them could have gotten past the rough patch that got them fired and put together a good run at a second World Cup.
Because WC 2002 was such a roaring success. We could have made it to the Final. So I grant the USSF that one exception. 2018 Arena was a bridge too far, however.
