That is definitely a good thing. Cal has great talent, now let's hope they find a good coach. If they follow the Cal tradition of hiring the assistant coach, then J.T. will be the next coach. Hard to know what she will be like on her own.

2nd round of the NCAA's is pretty decent. He had a great D. One record to for competing on the west coast. Pretty consistent. Don't know how this can be a good thing.

One can only go so far with great players. Look at Santa Clara, a team Cal beat in November. Their exiting senior class was the top rated recruiting class 4 years ago and, as a finale, couldn't help its team get out of the first round.

    Anyway, Thomas would do fine.

I heard the talk last weekend in Vegas was about these west coast openings. Kevin (CAL) was there and apparently he really is leaving for a better family situation. There is some question as to if JT wants the time commitment of a head coach.

ASU has talked to an interesting name, but I don't know if it is anything more than a convo or not.

Friesen is the overwhelming favorite to take over at SDSU. Coaches up and down the coast out here love him, the players and parents are dying for him to get it and according to a top 20 coach, he would do a wonderful job, much much better than who they have had in the past.

Millender has supposedly applied everywhere, and IMO he will get hired somewhere in a year or so. It's hard to justify hiring a guy who got canned not 6 months ago. Kat Mertz (UNLV) has put her name out there, which is not a surprise, seeing as she is love em and leave em coach til she gets her dream job. Her recruiting at UNLV has been dreadful, so I can see her bailing out there ASAP. Interesting comments about pressure on up at UW, still prevailing rumors that Jillian will leave UCLA (why do I keep hearing that...every year, and yet every year they are wrong). A lot of laughter and head scratching about the VCU hire.

    Houston

Bill Solberg is finally voted off the island at University of Houston. 8 years of 72 players leaving the program early, extremely weak scheduling to try and secure easy wins, no real success... Also, hear UH will not conduct a search and that Assistant Coach Susan Bush will take over permanently. They are very serious about soccer at UH????
    Any thoughts???

    Re: Houston

It's hard to read the tone of your post, but are you sarcastically saying that they are serious about soccer? My thought is that if they are serious, they will look around before hiring someone who has been there 24 months. If she is the best candidate, great, but to just name her is short sighted. If she had been there for years, helped bring in great recruits, had honed her skills as a coach, then sure, name her. But I don't know her at all, she could be awesome, the girls could love her and she could have all the skills and tools necessary to do well. Her playing experience is impressive, but that as a predictor of coaching success has been discussed on here at length. Can anyone speak up for her readiness?

Going back to an early subject in this thread, anyone know if Mark Salisbury (Idaho State) is still coaching anywhere?

Playing for Anson Dorrance is resume enough. If she could just teach and instill half the stuff she learned at UNC including the winning atitude, she'll be successful. All of AD's former players who are now coaches are successful.

Knowing the game has nothing to do with being able to teach it to others. Obviously you are not in the teaching or coaching profession. Very naive comment young lad. Coaching is about teaching and managing.

The San Francisco coach (an anson disciple) was fired this year. Bill Steffen (an anson disciple) was fired 2 years ago. The original Oklahoma coach (an anson disciple) was fired. Janet Rayfield was bad at Arkansas but good at Illinois. Which part does Anson get credit for? ONly the good I suppose according to your logic.

A good coach can come from tiny school USA background and win National Championships. You don't have to have played for a great coach to be one. Again very naive.

A valid point but playing for a great coach or playing at a high level does not preclude someone from being a good coach. I know great coaches who can barely play and I know great players who are also great coaches.

Am I correct in assuming some of the bad will directed at Roberts is because there is a perception by some that other "more qualified" coaches were passed over and she got the job because she played for Anson and on the National Team?

Sure you can be a great player and a have played for a great coach and subsequently be a great coach. I did not say otherwise. Just stating that the previous poster was full of it by stating that any anson disciple is automatically a great coach.

Do not know anything about Roberts but there are a lot more qualified coaches out there than her. Nobody can argue that. She has no recruiting experience whatsoever. That is assnuts!

Who are you calling naive? I've been playing, coaching, reffing this game for over 40 years. All I was saying is that coming from a school like UNC there is a certain aura and winning atitude. I'm sure Susan Bush knows her soccer. Putting it in teaching mode is another thing. But playing for Anson is a good start.
Quit judging people without knowing who they are. What's your credentials?

    Re: Houston

The only problem with UNC players that go into coaching is that they will try to implement the UNC style of high pace, high pressure and then sub in and out with quality players. Most other schools don't have the athletes, the talent or the deep bench to sustain that.

Steffen at Oregon tried to implement that and it failed miserably. If a coach of his experience did that, what do you expect a young former player to do?

    Re: Houston

Good point. There are however several former UNC palyers who are doing a good job and are not playing the exact style that UNC plays. Janet Rayfield at Illinois, Lori walker at Ohio State, Angela Kelly at Tennessee. Amy Kiah is struggling a little bit at Wofford, however.

    Re: Houston

kiah struggles because of budget not because she has no clue. I think it has more to do with lack of support. I think they have something like 4 1/2 rides to come play for her last time I talked with her. So for what she has money wise and not even a full time asst. coach I think she does pretty well.

College soccer is 80% recruiting and 20% coaching. You have D1 schools such as UNC, ND, Portland & UCLA that recruit at the national/Canada level and schools that recruit at the regional and local levels. On a sustained basis, those schools that have the benefit of player pool at the national level have an advantage.
