Coaching candidate? or couch candidate?

All US coaches face that same issue. CONCACAF is two countries and really, just us. He at least hit an almost 60% win rate doing it.

 

Meh, a manager's quality isn't determined by how well he "punches down." Especially when you're the chicago fire.

Its how well he "punches up" that matters.

And Berhalter hasn't done all that well with the USMNT. I hope it works out for you guys, but I have my reasons to doubt him.

 

I’m with you. I’m not sure but we did OK at the WC. Drawing England isn’t easy and I’m not sure the red card against Wales is his responsibility. But comparing him to Yallop is a bit of a stretch.

 

Berhalter is fine for the Fire...why? Because NO GREAT COACH is GOING TO SIGN TO BE COACH WITH THE FIRE!! Not a known great coach anyway. Best the Fire can do is Berhalter or an unknown that we get pure lucky with. I do not see the Fire as having...luck. And Yallop sucked with the Fire. I am not even sure he was awake at the games (regardless of any success in the past).

Yes...true...if the money flexed that way I am all in for a great coach. However, I am not sure that amount of money brings that kind of coach to the Fire anyway.

 

It’s easy to say “this choice sucks”. It’s harder to say who would realistically be better.

Second, just because we don't like the option, does not put the onus on us to select a superior option.

Third, Since you asked, there are dozens of coaches available.
Many would be better that Gregg Berhalter.

Sharing that list is absurd. I don’t think Xavi is coming here. We might be able to get Frank Lampard but he sucks. I did, however, see Berhalter on that list…

Do we really want Joachim Löw? A ball sniffing coach might complement our ball sucking mods now that I think about it.

I’m not sure what limitations there are on poaching coaches under contract but MLS probably restricts this during the season.

Also, we have a coach. The team did their exhaustive search last year at this time and determined that Frank Klopas was the right and only person to lead this team!
How can we argue with that?!?

 

Besides, why would he leave one of the best teams in MLS for us?

I’m sorry, but who would realistically be better is a valid question. Who is available, would come to MLS and Chicago, and would be better? We went the route of rookie coach and struggled. I’m not sure we want to try that again.

I’d vote for Curtin but I don’t think he’s leaving Philly. Gary Smith was fired from Nashville. Is he any good? As the league continues to grow, the player AND managerial pool continues to thin out. We don’t have a great pipeline of managers in lower divisions. Maybe there’s a diamond in the rough down there somewhere but who would it be?

That was back when the DP “didn’t exist” and players got “endorsement deals” from the league to come here. I’m guessing the finances have been locked down a bit since then. It was a little more Wild West in those days.

Gotcha. Then of course we move into late rebuilding season which we all complain about. That said, end of season is when most coaches do become available. Going for Gregg now is probably to prevent open season on him and all coaches. You have to want him badly enough now to lock him down.

What’s everyone’s thoughts on Sega? Defensive minded, works well with younger players. I don’t know that I’d wish this current team on him, though.

 

I love Sega. I have no idea how good of a coach he is and that’s no slight on him. I literally have no idea how successful he’s been.

 

I had a Genesis I bought in the 90's, and just enjoyed the hell out of it for years. Then it sat in the basement for two decades.
I gave it away when I moved.

Oh, Gonzalo Segares? He's great and should be an assistant with the Fire.
He probably makes more as US U-17 coach.

 

My understanding is Sega has been pretty successful with the youths. I loved him as a player and frankly...I would love him as an assistant (and if we go blind...head coach as well! lol).

Would have complete control of soccer ops but Mansueto would like to keep some of the technical staff on board. A tech dir/GM or similar title would work under him.
