Not for much in that day. Stupid is as stupid does. In the days when US fans outnumbered Canada fans at their home games. World Cup qualifiers at Swangard Stadium were beautiful.
Which means that managing Canada was a tougher job back then, compared to Berhalter constantly playing meaningless cashgrabs comfortably in the USA... ...which means that Berhalter is more likely to suck at management, compared to Yallop. Which in turn should be frightening for a fire fan.
I wish I could muster more enthusiasm for GGG than, he's OK, . . . I guess. Unlike Wicky he's had some success in the league and he's way more experienced than Ezra. Whether or not his judgement is sound few prospective coaches would know the US player pool better. He may be able to entice more "Acosta level" ex USMNT and Euro returnees that bump up the median talent level of the squad (Acosta's struggles duly noted). Other than that I can't think of many reasons not to hold my nose and move on.
I can only imagine its tough for you guys. I wish I could he enticed back, but having suffered through a lifetime of disappointment and agony as a fan of Chicago sports teams, I gotta see some semblance of a pulse first. And, I happen to believe that all native English-speaking managers just kinda suck, so Berhalter doesn't seem inspiring. We'll see.
If GM and TD are not to be held by one person, might it not make more sense to hire the GM before the TD/coach?
Yallop sucked everywhere. Berhalter amazingly won things at the international level. I mean, you can only win the games they put in front of you but Nations League and Gold Cup wins and a regular trouncing of Mexico should at least be seen as success. If his hiring was nepotism isn’t really a factor on if he succeeded or not. Maybe he shouldn’t have had the opportunity but he made the most of it. I presume his experiences over the past decade have helped him grow beyond the coach he was for Columbus and he’s learned from his mistakes.
his columbus record is pretty meh, but i don't really know anything about the roster/owner/budget he was working with GGG was pretty set in his 4-3-3 for the USMNT -- if he came here, I assume that would be our starting point
Potato Part Deux: The Nappening. "First time it was the coach that was napping. This time it will be the customers who take the naps."
Comparing Berhalter to Yallop is kinda ridiculous. Berhalter’s record with the US was actually pretty fantastic, just looking now.
Agreed, Yallop won two MLS Cups, Supporter's Shield, and is a two time MLS Coach of the Year! Perhaps the talent of this "golden generation" is not that good, as they often looked like children under Berhalter.
Donovan won Coach of the Year? That little scamp. Especially, as Donovan had been with LAG for 7 years when Yallop won his second Coach of the Year award and San Jose won the Supporter's Shield (2012)
And where does Guti play, as an 8-10 in the middle? He's not a winger. Acosta isn't an 8-10 and and this roster doesn't have a solution for the 6 in the middle.
I’m no fan of Berhalter but that’s ancient news. Berhalter’s been successful within the last decade. Yallop has always sucked, yes, even when the league had like 14 teams or whatever.
False 9…essentially a 4-3-1-2…bigger issue is who plays RM? Probably Herbers. And it leaves a head scratcher with Lassiter as well…him and Gutman should both be on the field, so Lassiter would probably replace Acosta at 65min. ………..Cuypers….MHS ………………..Guti …Acosta…Gimenez..Herbers Gutman..Czichos..Teran..Arigoni In general it’s a struggle to find a good fit for Acosta
At home. At home. At home. The road record ain't so good. The record in REAL competitons, ain't so good. The record vs non-CONCACAF top 20 teams, ain't so good. But in cashgrab jerk0ff throwaway bullshyte competitions held safely in the US of A, vs familiar CONCACAF types, meant only to line the pockets of the @$$holes in CONCACAF FAs who voted to allow migrant workers to die in the Qatari desert instead of the 2022 WC in the US? Berhalter's a golden god. His record is artificially inflated by cashgrab wastes of time.
