Okay after Twellman's hat trick this Saturday knocks us out of the playoff picture, it's likely OZ will get fired. Who should replace him? 1) Dave Dir 2) Dave Masur 3) Roberto Donadoni 4) Shep Messing 5)Giorgia Chinaglia (humor value mostly) 6) Paul Riley Pick one. If you can think of anyone else, throw the name in the mix.
Tab Ramos Assistant Coach to Shep Messing. Would be interesting, to say the least. Course, who takes Messing's place in the booth? Tommy, where are you?
Ray Hudson is an incompetent dullard. Passion is fine, but he has no brains for the game. Tabare is not a forceful enough personality. The one man who can do the job, though tainted from four years ago, is Steve Sampson. He espouses attractive soccer, is a good tactician, has international experience, a working knowledge of the American game, and a good knowledge of the region.
Best coaching team Dave Masur and Tab Ramos. Chinaglia give me a break. Tab Ramos deserves to stay with the team at some capacity.
Chinaglia is strictly for humor value, Frank. I AM serious when I say the team should have cheerleaders...ANYTHING to avoid looking at the mess on the field.
I do agree with with you 100% about cheerleaders. After watching the Metrostars losing most of the games at home, at least I could be watching the cheerleaders. Cheerleaders are good for the game, they do a lot work off the field, and the can cheer the fans at half time. Metrostars nothing for entretaiment the fans at half time. Boring
1) Dave Dir no. 2) Dave Masur seems that he could be a good disciplinarian coach- but could he cut in the pros? 3) Roberto Donadoni joking? 4) Shep Messing definitely a joke, have you listen to him on tv?? he would be worse than firmani. 5)Giorgia Chinaglia (humor value mostly) exactly, humor. 6) Paul Riley could be a good choice. he has coached many pros, before they were pros, and i always hear good things about him from people he coached. he has also stated that he doesn't plan on coaching the Riders anymore. (7)Sampson oh god, never. we might as well keep oz. he'll set up the team in a 7-2-1
Hee! For a second, I thought that said PAT Riley. On second thought, that guy at least could get his team motivated.
Vladislav Bogicevic (Bogie). Hey give the Bogie man a shot, he's been begging to coach Metro for years.
Bogie's not a bad choice. And not just to please Supernova & other Cosmos people. That might work. Bottom line, tough, is we need to get more out of what we have, find a right sided mid, an experienced defender & some depth.
Fernando Clavijo would be a great coach for the Metro's. he has already seen all the problems associated with coaching the Metro's when he was an assistant under Bora. Personally, I think that the idiots in the front office who manage the Revolution released Fernando before he had the chance to turn that team around and make it a winner. I wonder what the MLS season would have been like in Boston, if Clavijo had been able to get Chacon and Serna to put out 100% and play together as a scoring unit like they did in the past. Oh yeah... Who saw the potential early on in a very young Taylor Twellman. Was it Steve Nicol, or Clavijo? I'd give Fernando another shot at coaching in the MLS and the Metro's might be just the team. He's certainly a better choice than Steve Sampson....adios
Several suggestions. --2 long-time MLS assistants with good reps: Ralph Perez (assisted Bob Gansler with the National Side in "90, coached at San Jose State, thought he assisted Quieroz) and Dominic Kinnear (Yallop's assistant and former National team player); --Steve Sampson is worth a look. In US Soccer, when a national team coach fails, we tend to put them in the wilderness and pretend they never existed. Just look at Gansler as one example of this. Though I'm not wild about Sampson, he is worth interviewing. He was offered the job in San Jose but turned it down b/c it was only a 1-year deal. --Bobby Clark: former national team coach for New Zealand, GK for Aberdeen, former coach at Stanford (coached Oughton and Nelsen there) and now at Notre Dame. Has a great rep as a teacher. --Dave Sarachan (Arena's assistant) knows he needs some head-man experience before he'll be considered to replace Arena some day. What that means is even if Sarachan is successful, you won't have him long. B/c the formula would be: coach for 2 years, then quite to assist Arena again in 2004 qualifying, then replace Arena if he steps down after Germany 2006. And that's even if Sarachan said "yes"--right now he's got a guaranteed 4 year contract (ie: he's a coach as long as Arena is there) but could get fired anytime as a pro coach. --Richard Gough (former Everton, Scottish Int., player coach at KC with Newman and SJ, clashed with both MLS coaches, was respected by his teammates, was supposed to be the frontrunner for the DC job until Miami was contracted. He really wanted to coach here in the States, is now back in England I believe working with Everton's reserves). --George Gelnovatch: played a few games with United, known more for being head coach at U.Va (Alecko Eskandarian is one of his players) and the U20 US Coach. His U20 teams have performed very well. --Mooch Myernick: Not a glamous choice. But director of scouting for Arena in the WC. After being canned by Colorado, he coached P-40. Any team he coaches doesn't quit and fights until the last minute. Oh, and he played his college ball in Hartwick--not quick metro territory but still in NY. And don't think he's "sexy enough" to be chosen but he's a guy who would prepare his teams, kick butt (and motivates), is soccer smart, knows the league talent and prepares well. Plus, while not everyone loves Bruce Arena, just remember, there are only a few people Arena trusted with big responsibility during the WC: Sarachan was one. Myernich was another. As for a few of the other names that have been trotted out: --Clavijo? NE was gifted a championship this year. They got to draft the best player in the superdraft. Quick--identify anyone coming out of college who has been a significant contributor for his team this year. You can't do it--Brad Davis comes closest. With Twellman, NE got a gift at minimum salary (I bet he might make less than Davis) who could lead the league in scoring! Oh, they also were given Adin Brown, the leagues MVP APC, Ralston (who might lead in assists) and a few other useful players. But the man can't assemble a team. The team this year was his creation. The team last year was his creation. Both emploded. All the talent NE had and has and they might not make the playoffs. --Ramos? A good guy, competitor and maybe the best American on the dribble there ever way. But that's not qualification for being a coach. Saying he should coach is like assuming Eddie Firmani has the skills to be a good coach in MLS--even less so b/c Firmani coached pro ball before. --Donadoni? Didn't the NE experience with Zenga prove this idea is no good? Donadoni would come here only to get a job in Europe (ie: get a year's head coaching experience first so you can get hired by the clubs you really want to work for). If there is anything MLS has shown (and the hiring of Queiroz and Pererra and Miluntonic should show) is that you need someone who knows the local talent and will take the time to understand the leagues quirky rules and policies. Donadoni would fail. --Bob Bradley (Chicago) is wishful thinking. He had an opportunity to jump ship and instead signed an extension.
Im going with the Major League Baseball logic (it worked with the Diamondbacks) of hiring Shep from the announcer booth. At least he knows what he is getting himself into having to watch this team all year. I laughed as well thinking Pat Riley for a second with his slicked back hair and Armoni suit at the swamp pacing down the sidelines with his $500 shoes full of mud and turf.
