Since someone already brought it up...will there be any problems/fallout with "Phoenix City Football Club" since there seems to be a youth club by the exact same name in the UK? There appears to be a copyright...look at the bottom of the page...http://www.phoenixcityfc.com/clubhistory.htm
I doubt that kind of trademark carries over national lines, or at least they don't prosecute it. Otherwise, we'd have scores and scores of top-level teams worldwide having to change their names. They could also call themselves "Phoenix City S.C."
Point taken... We should not be afraid to be purists in this sense, even though "soccer" originated in England, "football" and it's linguistic variations are the international standard (except for Italy's "calicio" which was ordained by fiat by Mussolini) and this is the international game. MLS has shown us that true fans of the game appreciate authenticity and reward their teams with a stronger sense of loyalty. That is what I think at least...
Well in regards to this, the team has announced to a private source that the official team name has changed from Phoenix City FC to simply Phoenix FC. More announcements are set to come over the course of the next week.
The web domain could be "phoenixcityfc.us" ? I like the name... better than monsoon or sahuaros. I just hope the stadium, or wherever they will play, is not in BFE
As killersheep has said the team has changed its name to "Phoenix FC." It has dropped "City" from its name. And the website was going to be "phoenixcitysoccer.com." But since "City" is no longer there, we're not sure what the URL is going to be now.
Do we have an official announcement on the shortened name? I'd like to change and rename the Wikipedia article, but need to justify the switch.
The team has made exactly zero official announcements to the public so far, which makes me nervous. The announcement that the team would be starting play next year was made and distributed by the league (USL PRO). All of the other information was from either the LFR meetup with the ownership (introduction of ownership group, team colors and a few teasers about income generating sources, as well as teasers on tryout dates) or private phone calls with a few people (team name change, teasers about social media release dates, teasers about tryout dates).
I wrote the Wikipedia entry for Phoenix City FC and I'm also waiting for an official announcement about the name change as well.
Keep in mind it's not likely any "official" announcements will come during the season. Orlando wasn't confirmed for 2011 until late October 2010. Keep calm and carry on.
If the howl of a canine-type creature wasn't already in use here in Valley sports, that would be even better, but Wolves is a hell of a lot better than City.
Sure hope they get on the ball and incorporate/trademark that name with the Secretary of State....because right now they aren't...(But I did learn the Arizona Cardinals are actually incorporated in Delaware as of 2009)
I was thinking it sounds like "next door neighbor"; New Mexico University. Which actually has a fantastic mens soccer program.
Not a fan of naming (football/soccer) teams after animals. Nothing against animals at all... It's just not a what I prefer. I personally liked Phoenix City FC. At least it looks like the official name is just Phoenix FC and wolves is just the "nickname"
I think this is definitely the case here. Its like Orlando City SC, where they call themselves the Lions in press releases and marketing but in reality the name lions appears no where on its official name.
