Hi, I admit I know nothing about the MFL but am curious to know why Mexican clubs compete in the Copa Libertadores and the CONCACAF Champions Cup. Seems a little odd that they compete in two continents competitions. How exactly does it work? The best teams play the South Americans and the also rans spank the US teams? :)

    Thanks.

I think there's a well-defined path for the Mexican teams in the CCC that get there. With four berths and in the absence of a cup championship, the winners and runners up from the Apertura and Clausura gain entry into. Morelia and America are the most recent champions, Morelia defeated Toluca for their title and America beat Necaxa. Those four are the four in the CCC semis. So those are the top of the table, the best teams, so to speak.

In order to gain entry into the Copa Libertadores, two Mexican clubs compete with a pair of Venezuelan teams for two berths in the tournament, the spots in the tournament are actually allocated for the Venezuelan clubs. The Venezuelan Federation gets compensated for their allowing Mexico's clubs a crack a their two berths, which is why they do it in the first place. What's funny is that the Mexican clubs that take place in the Copa Libertadores aren't necessarily the best clubs in the league. The year Cruz Azul made the final they didn't even make la liguilla, the playoffs.

Now what I have no idea about is how Mexican clubs get chosen for the Pre-Pre Libertadores which is the play-in for the play-in with the Venezuelans. I'm sure someone here has explained it before, but I've been trying to figure this one out for some time. I think promoters choose them based on who will sell tickets since, if I recall correctly, the entire Pre-Pre is played in the United States.

    Hope that helps.

It all has to do with the lack of competition in the TFC. Since there wasnt any consistant or demanding competitions the FMF saw the CONMEBOL as the answer to their problems. The original idea was to join their confederation but FIFA would not allow it, such a move would be devestating to the CONCACAF.

The best the FMF could do was get an invitation to the Copa America. With the sucess of their first participation (Ecuador 93) reaching the final, the next obvious step was to try and get invited to Copa Libertadores. After 4 years of frustrated negotiations a Mexican football promoter found a loophole and negotiated with the Venezuelan FA.

The Mexican Clubs that get to compete against the Venezuelans must have money to finace a Elimination round (Pre-pre Libertadores) against other MFL clubs and if they advance to the play offs against the Venezuelan Clubs (Pre-Libertadores) where they must cover the Venezuelan Clubs travel expenses. Why so many games you say, well the Mexican sports promoter must pay off the CONMEBOL and CONCACAF to allow the MFL clubs to partake in the Copa Libertadores, Once the TV money kicks in everyone makes cash money and all is good..
