I was under the impression that the World Club Championship was stopped in about 1999 due to lack of interest and its perceived irrelevance. Now I see some stuff on the FIFA site about it possibly still going on. Did this tourney ever cease? Is there an official website for it? I'd really like to see something like this. I suppose it's debatable how valuable such a tourney is, but I'd love to see an international club match-up that actually meant something, and matched up sides from different confederations. DC United v. Cobreloa, Manchester City v. Ajax Cape Town, etc. etc.

It was stopped because there was not enough funds to have this competition or something like that, which can also be 'blamed' on the non-interest for this Cup, or the tv money would be pouring in. They never got rid of the Cup alltogether, they just said it would come back at a later, more appropiate time (i.e. 'when we have enough money' :D )

I dunno... Call me naive, but I'd think a World Club Championship should be a natural extension of what's already happening. We have a World Cup and Continental Club Championships, so why wouldn't a World Club Championship have more interest?

Because it's contrived nonsense and the one and only time they managed to stage one it was the organisational equivalent of being hit in the head with a spade?

Only South Americans with inferiority complexes about European club football and eye-candy Asian fans have the vaguest interest in such a competition. For the rest of us, there's the Champions League and the domestic leagues of Europe.

Except for every single thing you said in your post, it's spot on.

He should have added "and know-nothing Yank fans who get a hard-on for seeing the 'TOP CLUBS' play each other."

But other than that, he was right.

OK, thanks, Oscar for that bit of info. That's too bad, but not entirely surprising. So many clubs, national sides, etc. in the world, and therefore so many ways to formulate a tournament. Our sport might be tournament-saturated (and in North America, seemingly darby-saturated). Good to hear it's being given another chance, though, and I agree with avidsinger. The UEFA cup and other such competitions are great, but I feel it's a fun idea to compare clubs of different zones. There's so much great soccer that no one is even aware of because the ManU's, the PSV's and the Celtics of the world get all the attention.
