    Second Qualifying Round

There is less than a week left for the first leg of the Thun - Dynamo series.

Re: CLQ: FC Thun & BSC Young Boys [R]

    Thun - Basel 3:0 (0:0)

What an excellent performance right before the away match in Kiev. I have to say I was very sceptical after the draw, but if Thun plays with this much heart they definitely stand a chance versus Dynamo.

I didn't realize until now...

Of course it should say FC Basel instead of YB in the title. If somebody could please fix it.

I thought the thread title was a little odd. Fixed.

Thun has leveled the match. It is now in the 72'. This is a great showing for Thun. A draw would leave them in a great position with the home match in Berne.

Ten minutes plus stoppage time to go. Even 3-2 would be a decent result with those two away goals.

I'm sure Kiev is throwing everything forward now.

    FT: 2-2!

A very nice result which gives Thun a decent chance of progressing to the next round. Those Ukranian teams are traditionally much tougher at home than they are on the road. A 0-0 or 1-1 next week gets it done.

P.S. I'd love a link to highlights if TSR or SFR has any!

I will check tsr later tonight.

Great result for Thun. On a side note, how much do Qualfying matches count for the coefficient?

Qualifying round matches are only worth half (which I personally don't have a big problem with except for the 3rd qualifying round, which given the depth in quality of teams across Europe, are every bit as competitive as the Group Stage matches).

    So Thun's draw is only worth 1 x 50% = 0.5 pts.

Congratulations to Thun! That is an excellent result for them.

Not bad against a team with a budget of 60 million Euros (compared to about three) - even if the tie was a bit lucky in the end. Apparently Eldin Jakupovic had a superb match in goal.

As for the UEFA ranking, it is important that Thun makes the third qualifying round and therefore at least the UEFA Cup. We can't afford another bad year or else we could soon face the reality of losing a European spot.

Eliminating Dynamo would also set back Ukraine (currently 14th)

    Rob,

Thanks for the link to those highlights.

Man, that was some really great action. It seems like that was an incredible match to watch! And you are right, some of those saves were unbelievable.

There is a very interesting phenomenon ahead of Friday's Champions League draw. Basel is an unseeded team in the 3rd round, and as such could potentially be paired against a very difficult opponent (Liverpool, ManU and Inter would be especially unfair). However, because Thun is unseeded in the 2nd Qualifying Round, and would therefore effectively take their opponent's UEFA coefficient if they progress, Thun could quite possibly draw a much easier opponent to advance into the Group Stage.

How incredible would that be? Of course, no offense to Thun, but they would have trouble gaining a point in the Group Stage.

The second Thun goal was great.

PS: Thanks Rob. SFDRS is not allowed to put away matches on their site due to contractual reasons (or so they claim.)
That is a very interesting point. I didn't think of that...

I think that Thun has a really good chance of advancing. I hope that Berne fans show up to support Thun. I would assume that a whole Dynimo Kiev fans are not making the trip. Any idea what sort of Ukranian presence there is in Switzerland? I know there are a fair number of Russians but Ukranians?

That would be very interesting if Thun had an easier match than Basel. But we are getting a little ahead of ourselves now. Whatever the outcome, it can't be worse than the Celtic match:

Is it possible that Thun (if they win) could be drawn with Basel? That would create a very interesting situiation. Would that be a first for Swiss teams to play each other in European competition?

For Basel the best draw woule be against Artmedia (who lead Celtic 5-0), Rosenborg (who are playing very poorly this season), or Rangers.

For Thun the best draw would be Shelbourne if they advance(currently 0-0), Anorthosis (if they can hold on, currently 3-1), or Wisla.

Teams from the same country are prevented from being drawn against each other until the quarter-final stage, I believe. The lone exception this year is Liverpool since there are 5 English teams in the competition and they were let in late.

Given Basel's international experience and strong home field, I would give them no worse than even chances against half of the seeded teams. Obviously the ones you mention would be great matchups for them.

If Thun advances, there are only a handful of unseeded teams that they should truly fear.
