Roger Allaway advocates for Patenaude and Souza as great players, but greater than Donovan and Dempsey? No way.
He got Twitter shout-outs from all his former clubs. Some Tottenham fans picking up where they left off, dismissing his highlights there as a bunch of deflections and tap-ins.
Fitting that he and Landon ended tied. One of the few who showed they cared at the end of last cycle. Clint may have been well past his prime, but I remember one game last cycle that was starting to slip away. You could tell the instant that Clint realized he was going to miss the WC if they lost that game, he turned on the old Clint and was getting after it and giving his all. Thanks for your efforts Clint.
That fandom and their incessant whining about Dempsey is why to this day I laugh when Spurs sputter to a 4th/5th place finish. The worst. Also this thread should be longer than 3 pages.
Bruce Arena: “he tries -hit” Magic Sponge: No Bruce, he DID -hit. Magical -hit in fact. Thank you Clint Dempsey
While I appreciate all he has done. I would rather he get one shot. He is the only player who deserves a send off last game. Get rid of every single other player on the USNT that was a part of this stain on not qualifying except for Pulisic, Yedlin, Acosta and Bobby Wood.. everyone else can go rot in the MLS for all I care.
He punched above his weight. He wasn't particularly athletic -- not strong, nor fast, nor quick --- and he wasn't particularly skillful, but what he was incredibly determined, tough as nails, and creative. I've never seen a player with so much desire. His never say die attitude is the model for all American players -- simply the greatest American player ever.
Great career. IMO he was definitely the second best American field player ever. He was past it and is didn't deserve any more NT games. Maybe a send-off match, but it should be his choice, unlike Bradley, Howard who do not deserve it.
No one's mentioning Dempsey's greatest accomplishment- spending many years in England and never developing some lame/odd English-American hybrid accent. Looking at you, Brad Guzan and Brad Friedel...
Hate to say it... BUT...Anyone see a comment from Bradley? Maybe I missed it. Maybe I didn’t. Hmm... ETA: if you interpret this as my way of pointing out Bradley is a toxic bitch, you are correct.
Craziest dream I ever had in my life, I was dead sober and Clint Dempsey invited me to his after party in Torreon after a Santos victory. He was definitely growing weed, I remember STP playing in the background, but Clint didn’t really like it. Hercules Gomez was there sipping tequila. In real life I was at Snow Classico. Clint played how we want to play. The Ghana goal, the other Ghana goal, the Feds Cup, he scored with his ball-sack in Manaus. Drawing the Ghana penalty in 2010. Deuce Face. After the 2009 Dos a Cero I was waiting for my flight next to him the next morning in the Columbus airport. And he looked really chill so I just let him be.
Why are there no quotes from “team captain” Michael Bradley? Have I simply missed them? Yes, I did google for them. But I’ve found nothing. Found words about and for Clint from Landon and Tim. Nothing from Bradley. I find it conspicuous in its absence. And let me be clear, I hope Bradley has beef. And I firmly side with Deuce. Or anyone not named Bradley.
He had a tribute of his own. Looks like Clint Dempsey wasn't the only former #USMNT star who retired today. #RCTID https://t.co/g46SFbjEe5— Mike Donovan (@TheMikeDonovan) August 30, 2018
No mention of his goal against Juve in the semis? He was the only Texan I ever like . Guess he can finally go fishin' now. Cheers Duece.
Thanks Clint Dempsey for everything you did for US soccer... not that I think he's reading this or anything. As for the goalscoring record, we should arrange a friendly vs. American Samoa and put Dempsey and Donovan up top and have them play 90 mins to see who gets the most goals... have Jozy Altidore take the penalties just to put some pressure on them as he'd be the next in line...
