Yeah I heard about this. Amazing story. It's weird how people react to situations where your life is in danger and you would do ANYTHING to survive. A while back I was climbing at the local crags and was doing a 5.8 route on a relatively short climb. In the middle of this route is a very prominent hold that is essentially a huge chunk of basalt. I was just a bit below that hold and put both of my hands on it and began to pull myself up when all of a sudden I felt it give and come out. I ************ you not but everything after that was in slow motion. As soon as I pulled it out it hit the area just above my right knee. Ron, my belayer, was just staring up at it as it was coming down. Once again I saw everything in slow motion. The boulder hit several feet away from him. If it would've nailed him he would've definately been seriously injured and I would either be dead or typing this up in a vegetative state (I know that's impossible but you get my point). I am soooo glad that Ron didn't panic and let go of the rope. The rock started tumbling down the hill. A pair of climbers were coming up the trail and barely missed getting hit by it. The boulder probably rolled another 100 feet or so before it came to a stop in this massive boulder field. If that boulder field was there it would have continued down to the parking lot (with my Pathfinder in direct line with it) and possibly onto the busy highway below. WHEW!!! We actually kept climbing for several hours after that but needless to say we were pretty wigged out by it all. When we were hiking back down after we were done we found the rock I pulled out and it was the size of a regular TV and it was easily several hundred pounds. I've got pics of it too. If anyone is ever in the Boise REI go to the customer service desk and there is a picture of me laying next to it.
