I like the Clash better. The name was just original. The Earthquakes is too common. What do you think?

What other teams or groups go by the name Earthquakes? It doesn't seem like a very common name to me.

Personally, I don't care too much for somewhat abstract team nicknames like the Clash, Burn, or Fusion. However, I can live with them if they have something to do with the locale of the team; e.g. Chicago Fire.

'Clash' all the way. 'Earthquakes' is so lame, part of the unfortunate Meterparel legacy.

They should make bumperstickers that read:
"San Jose Earthquakes: dumb name, real cool thing."

The color change was a very good move, though I wish they didn't feel the need to stick a big Disney-ish soccer ball in the logo. I also hope they go back to their Ajax-ish uniform design, and stick with it.

Hey, it's better than when the old KC would play against Dallas.

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp Earthquakes, no question about it. It's just simply a better name (not to mention the historical soccer legacy in San Jose).

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp And it would have been the San Jose Earthquakes from MLS Day 1 had Nike not stuck its nose where it didn't belong (i.e. the team-naming game). *

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp It was the only thing that Meterparel got right in her tenure in San Jose (besides changing the logo and the uniform colors and design, that is).

    * Kudos to the Chicago front-office for resisting Nike's demands to call the team the "Chicago Rhythm", replete with cobra logo (???)!

The one I really don't understand is D.C. United. What teams united to form them?

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp Most likely the same two teams that united to form Manchester United (seriously!). ;)

You say Earthquakes, I say Clash, let's just call 'em United already.

This is a true chant from Austin Peay. They had this good basketball player in the 80's named Bill Fly.

"The Fly is open. Let's go Peay!"

That mascot was way too happy to be a scorpion. I was always thought it was a lobster.

That was the later version. Earlier we had a small-headed mascot that was as mean-looking as they come.

Clash was a better name, however the logo thing was stupid, I still don't know what it was suppose to be, and the colors changed every year, yet they were never colors you could discribe to anyone.

I started going to Clash games in 1998 so perhaps the scorpion morphed into the more kid-friendly lobster just prior to that.

Does anyone have a picture of the ferocious scorpion mascot?

Actually, that's Fly Williams, who played in the 70's.

By far the worst MLS uniforms ever were the 96 Clash road uniforms. A baby poop yellow color with some snotty green down the sleaves. With that said, and even though the Earthquakes have been league champions, there is just something about the Clash. Maybe it was the dream I had of one day hearing thousands of Clash fans singing "Rock the Casbah" as their team would take the field a la the Kop Choir singing "You'll Never Walk Alone" for Liverpool FC.

Jose Clash 1.0 looks like Charmander.

I know SJ is not the Clash anymore, but its so hard not to call them that.

QueefCakes is a good one too.

Clash - Quakes, not much difference in my book. All I know is that if it were still the Clash MLS would have had a golden marketing theme:

    Landon Calling

I'm glad your wit is helping you compensate for the horrible, pathetic season your team is having.

While "Landon Calling" is a marketing opportunity missed, the Earthquakes is a much better name than the Clash. Besides, everytime I hear "Clash" nowadays, I get the image of John Doyle celebrating yet another shootout win, and I am frieghtened. Almost as much as I'm frieghtened by Jose Clash Version 2. It makes Rikter the Cyberdog look like marketing genious! Whatever happened to him anyway?
