9PM kickoff tonight in Guadalajara: U.S. U-23 ROSTER: Goalkeepers: D.J. Countess (Dallas Burn), Doug Warren (D.C. United). Defenders: Kelly Gray (Chicago Fire), Ricky Lewis (Los Angeles Galaxy), Oguchi Onyewu (Metz, France), David Stokes (D.C. United), Chris Wingert (St. John's Univ.), Alexander Yi (Antwerp, Belgium). Midfielders: DaMarcus Beasley (Chicago Fire), Kyle Beckerman (Colorado Rapids), Brian Carroll (D.C. United), Ricardo Clark (MetroStars), Justin Mapp (Chicago Fire), Logan Pause (Chicago Fire), David Testo (Richmond Kickers). Forwards: Landon Donovan (San Jose Earthquakes), Alecko Eskandarian (D.C. United), Nate Jaqua (Chicago Fire)
One other local product also did very well. Wingert (St John's U) set up the game winner after coming on in the 75th minute. "Second-half substitute Chris Wingert played a ball down the left wing to Justin Mapp, who had come on for a worn-out DaMarcus Beasley in the 70th minute. Mapp drew two defenders as he dribbled almost to the endline and laid a ball back to an unmarked Eskandarian, who slotted it through traffic from 10 yards out to give the U.S. a 2-1 lead in the 75th minute. The goal was almost identical to the one scored back on June 17, 2002 off a series from Claudio Reyna and Josh Wolff, with Brian McBride providing a clinical finish." The US nats are so desparate for an offensive left back that they are dipping into the college ranks for prospects. It seems that Wingert did not disappoint.
It's only a matter of time before he's called up by Arena. Hopefully not for this summer's competitions as O'Brien, Sanneh, etc. will be available, and we could really use Clark as a stabilizing force with Mathis, Pope and potentially Timmy being gone. Looking at that U-23 squad makes me think we have a damn good shot at a gold medal in Athens.
Other than the fact that he's not a left back, and this was the U-23s, not a Nat callup, you've got a great point. Many top US players still attend college. There a still a limited number of U-23 pros out there, and a lot of them aren't necessarily better than the best college players.
The poor Mexicans must have thought they were having a flashback. Then they realized they werent dreaming.
What happened to Edson Buddle? He is under 23 and should be available for the Olympics. The same for Convey. He can play the left side either on defense, midfield or forward.
I dunno it seems OO is pretty cool in itself LOL. As in you see a 6'4" 212 lb defender coming at you and you say "O O!"
Oguchi's nickname has got to be "Gooch". I believe Buddle was hurt and Convey was playing for DC in the prestigious "Capital Cup" against Tottenham.
Anybody see that the third goal, the 80 yarder with Mexico's keeper up for a set piece, was CNN's Play of the Day?
