Well the big game is finally here.

Kahn and Ballack have resumed training after missing the weekend match.

I've looked into my crystal ball and it tells me we are going to win 2-0 !!!

Should be a slaughter. Ronaldo is looking good, and our defense sucks raw eggs. Makaay might be able to sneak one in on the other end, however. 1-3 to Madrid. Although I want Bayern to win.

    Probable line ups:

Bayern Munich: Kahn - Sagnol, Kuffour, Demichelis, Lizarazu - Salihamidzic, Hargreaves, Ballack, Zé Roberto - Pizarro, Makaay

Real Madrid: Casillas - Salgado, Helguera, Raul Bravo, Roberto Carlos - Beckham, Guti - Figo, Raul, Zidane – Ronaldo

Wow look at the difference in lineups...

    Slaughter? I think not :D

Why don't you head over to the Uefa section in BigSoccer, I was able to get some info from someone helpful there on where to watch the match.

Maybe someone will know where to catch it in New York.

Now let's not forget though that 6 out of the last 8 meetings between these two teams were decided in favor of FCB (if I have my facts right?) But I would have preferred to have the first leg played in Madrid. Oh well, let's hope for the best.

Is it a bad omen that I had a dream that Madrid won 7-1 (I still wake up mad about the CL loss to ManU every once in a while)? Maybe I'm hoping for this so that FCB will finally clean house, instead of the continuous schönreden.

How do you expect Bayern to play tonight ? I can’t imagine they’ll repeat the Saturday horror show. I think they’ll try the “flucht nach vorne” tactic. All the pre-match talk from the Bayern management and the media has given Real the role of absolute favorites. Hitzfeld and the players have nothing to lose now as they’ve already been declared dead. Why not then go for it from the start? Attack the Madrid back line with high pressing and try to unsettle them. If you start cautiously they will get into their rhythm and then Bayern won’t be able to touch the ball.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. Everyone is expecting Bayern to retreat into a defensive shell from the get-go. This will allow Real to get into their rhythm and dominate. If Real controls the game, it's only a matter of time before they score, and score big, especially with Bayern's suspect defense. So why not go for all out attack? Bayern shoudl push Ballack forward, give Ze free reign, and just go for it. Real's back line sucks, so I could see Bayern getting a couple of quick ones if they employ this strategy, then they could go back to a counter attacking style.

Regardless, Bayern really have their work cut out for them. I really don't see their center backs stopping Raul and Ronaldo. Maybe putting in the young, hungry and talented Demichelis will do the trick.

Remember when he let in that Kullerball from Gemeli (Real Madrid) in 2001 (I think). That also let them progress to the next round.

Well, the good news is that Real still hasn't won a CL game in Munich.

The bad news is that we need alot of luck at Bernabeu.

In case anyone missed it. This performance + a win would have lifte the whole squad for the rest of the season. This performance + world's stupidest mistake will pretty much ruin the squad for the rest of the season.

And from 30 yards out... you have to be **********ting me!!! I am with you on this one. Enough with the "Oliver Kahn says this team is not mentally strong enough" or "Kahn says he like the team spirit after recent drubbing" headlines. Worry about the sorry ass form between the posts that just handed Real Madrid their entry ticket into the next round. A 1-0 victory would have been a complete season turning victory. A 2-0 victory would have possible seen them through. But to draw just gave the opposition the higher hand in the next match. Have we all had enough of the late goal this season against Bayern? We are the perfect 80 minute team. What you mean we have to play for ten more minutes?!?

On behalf of Hitzfield, I commend him on his game plan and lineup. The man knows Real Madrid. Let's hope there is some magic left when they travel to the Bernabau.

Overall, I think Bayern played well. Everyone was outstanding. Ze Roberto, Kuffor, Hargreaves, everyone except of course Kahn who let in a goal which even Roberto Carlos was surprised himself. I was sitting there praising Kahn for catching the ball, before realizing the ball was in the net! Anyway, if Bayern play with the same intensity in Madrid, they'll get into the next round.
Hey Basti, did u watch the game? I watched it at Fox and Hounds. Man, the place was packed, and they could only let me watch the second half.

Your supposed "zueinander stehen" in schlechten zeiten!

Seriously though, very tough on Bayern, I really thought they would get a second goal which probably would have given they a great chance of winning the tie.

A couple of questions for Bayern fans:

    - Since when did Ze Roberto turn into a little diving cheat? He must have hit the deck about 7 or 8 times last night. I've been an admirer of his since he was at Bayer and he's better than that. He is starting to remind me of the cheating striker up in Dortmund!

    - Anyone else notice how Kahn jumped on the ball for Ronaldo's shot in the first half? I saw the replay at half time and thought it was a poor save as he didn't get down quickly and get his body behind the ball, meaning it would have rolled in if he had of let it slip, which is of course what happened for the goal. Was Ollie trying to protect his injury?

Am i the only one to think Sagnol deserve a special mention for this game ?

He blocked completly the left side of Madrid's attack which is where they use to make the difference. Zidane was such in trouble on the left that he had constently to move back to the center in order to avoid Sagnol's defense. Roberto Carlos did nothing offensivly because of him too (and hargreaves).

I am maybe biased but i really think he was the MOTM (Hargreaves and Kuffour were both great tho)

After being bitterly disappointed and angry, I take back what I wrote about Kahn. It's tough being a goalkeeper because mistakes can be so fatal; the blame is also on the forwards for not finishing their chances. Real were lucky it wasn't 3-0 by half time.

but on a happier note... wow what a performance by Bayern!! I haven't seen them play like that for more than a year and this is the Bayern I know!
The much critisized defense was world class yesterday... was Raul even playing? Incredible!! Kuffour, Sagnol and Hargreaves played super!
Ze Roberto, Demichelis and Lizarazu too!! Bayern's midfield totally dominated Madrid's star studded line up.

Overall I am happy to see the old Bayern despite Kahn's blunder but sadly the return leg is very unfavorable with the away goal and I don't expect Bayern to progress.

kotto_bass: No I wasn't there, I had a bit of a hangover and couldn't muster enough energy for the drive. Plus I think I would have thrown a tantrum after the match with the alcohol still in my body haha.

I wouldn't mind if Bayern tried to play half this good in the BL. We can't hope (?) to draw Real Madrid in the CL every year (should we qualify), just to see Bayern finally try to be the team that we know them being capable of.

Also, e_k1 made a great observation about Kahn possibly trying to protect his injury. In the end, though, everyone knows that we wouldn't have won the CL in 2000, and made to the WC final without Kahn. Still, I hope his barmaid can console him; he's not getting any love from me in the near future...
