Has there been a city in the past 10 years or so that has won multiple major sports championships in the same year?
If you include MLS and WUSA: San Jose 2001 Not the same city but same metro area: New York Yankees and New Jersey Devils, 2000 Another one with MLS: Chicago Bulls and Fire, 1998
The Devils won the Stanley Cup in 2000, and I think the Yankees won the World Series the same year. The Chicago Bulls and Fire both won their respective championships in '98. Denver and Dallas have danced around each other with Stanley Cups and Super Bowls, but never actually in the same year. If you're including CFL, I'm sure some team has won the Gray Cup the same year that city's NHL entry won the Stanley Cup. Also, I know they're not championships, but Philly held "Coach of the year" awards in all 4 major sports a couple of years ago (Bill Barber, Larry Brown, Andy Reid, and whoever the Phillies manager was). 1992 - Stampeders, Penguins, Blue Jays, Bulls, Cowboys 1993 - Eskimos, Canadiens, Blue Jays, Bulls, Cowboys 1994 - Lions, Rangers, N/A, Rockets, 49ers 1995 - Stallions, Devils, Braves, Rockets, Cowboys 1996 - Argonauts, Avalanche, Yankees, Bulls, Packers, DC United 1997 - Argonauts, Red Wings, Marlins, Bulls, Broncos, DC United 1998 - Stampeders, Red Wings, Yankees, Bulls, Broncos, Fire 1999 - Tiger-Cats, Stars, Yankees, Spurs, Rams, DC United 2000 - Lions, Devils, Yankees, Lakers, Ravens, Wizards 2001 - Stampeders, Avalanche, Diamondbacks, Lakers, Patriots (Hell yeah), Earthquakes, Cyber Rays 2002 - ?, Red Wings, ?, Lakers, ?, Courage Let's see, Detroit doesn't have a CFL franchise so that's impossible. Right now, things are looking a little shaky for the Bums. And does anybody really think the Panthers should be 3-0?
Many people wouldn't call soccer a major sport, but there may have been years when the Yankees won the Series and the Cosmos won the NASL title. Given the wealth of NYC franchises it's surprising that a "double" hasn't happened more often. I can only recall two. The Mets won the Series in 1986 and the Giants won the Super Bowl the following January. The other occasion was 1956 when the Yankees won the World Series and the Giants won the NFL Championship. New Yorkers like to say they won a treble in 1969. What actually happened was this: 1. Jets won the Super Bowl in January (1968 season). 2. Mets won the Series in October (1969 season). 3. Knicks won the NBA title in May 1970 (1969-70 season). So all three teams played in 1969, but I would argue that a true treble would have had the Jets winning the Super Bowl in January 1970 (1969 season) and the Knicks winning in May 1969 (1968-69 season). It depends upon when you start the "sports year", but no matter what month you pick, those three NYC titles were clearly won in more than one year.
In 1992,the Bulls and the Blackhawks came close, but the Blackhawks ended up losing the Stanley Cup Finals.
2002 Carolina Courage and Durham Bulls! The Carolina Hurricanes lost the Stanley Cup Finals. Duke and NC Central University won the NCAA Division I and II basketball titles the same year in the early 90s
Mets won the series in 86. Giants won the Super Bowl in 87. Rangers won the Cup in 94 and the Knicks were oh so close but Mr. Starks screwed that one up for us.
1989 University of Michigan won the NCAA basketball title and the Detroit Pistons won the 1989 NBA title
I want to say 1976, Pittsburgh Steelers win Super Bowl. Univ. of Pittsburgh with Tony Dorsett wins NCAA football title.
The Steelers won their third Super Bowl in January 1979. I think the Pirates won the World Series that year, too.
Nope. The game might have been played in '87 but the season was '86. No one goes around saying the '87 Giants Superbowl team.
The SF Bay Area came close in a sweep around 1988 and 1989.... The Niners won the Super Bowl on January, 1989. The Bay Series -- with both the A's and the Giants reaching the World Series-- took place 9 months later. Of course, the Niners took their second straight Super Bowl the following January. The A's returned to the World Series in October, 1990. That was before San Jose Sharks and Clash/Earthquake..... so the Warriors were the only Bay Area professional team failed to reach the final of their sport. I believed SF Blackhawk did win the A-League with Eric Wynalda around that time. Steve Sampson with Santa Clara shared the NCAA soccer title with Bruce Arena's Virginia in December, 1989(?).
I've never heard a New Yorker say that. For that matter, I've never heard a New Yorker use the word "treble" at all.
2002: Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Sparks, Los Angeles Galaxy Now if Anaheim wins the World Series..do they get lumped into LA?
Not quite responsive, but in 1980, Philadelphia teams appeared in consecutive finals of the four major sports. I think the order was Eagles (lost to Oakland); Flyers (lost to NYIslanders); Sixers (lost to Lakers); Phils (beat KC).
If people are going to lump the Devils in with the Yankees for 2000, you might as well associate the Angels with LA I mean, I AM a fan of the Devs & Yanks, but somehow I feel the Devils win was really more of a NJ thing, just as the Nets winning the NBA's Eastern Conference was earlier this year. Some people "on the other side of the river" may hop the bandwagon when the Jersey teams do well, but not a lot: most remain Rangers/Isles/Knicks fans.
C'mon now, I may be living in Cali now but I've been over that bridge a dozen times before... of course I'm referring to that pedestrian bridge from the GS lots over to the Arena which used to be named after a certain governor... (a not very good one at that) We're talking really fine semantics here, hmm? Anyway. You are right about where the Nets and Devils play, but it's also true that the tentacles of Rangers and Knicks fandom reach deep into North Jersey... and will continue to in the future, regardless of how well the NJ teams do. My family left NJ about the time the Devils started getting good (early '90s) and I remember how disheartening it was the one time I went to a Devils/Rangers game and the building was split 50/50. The crowd is NOT supposed to erupt like that with the VISITING team scores!!!
The only reason that happens is because Devils season tickets arent sold out. Rangers have THOUSANDS of companies around them who are willing to buy up some tickets not to mention individual fans, so it makes it hard for Devils fans to get into MSG in droves. in NJ the only thing the arena has around it is swamp and highways for a few miles. Theres not that many companies buying season tickets and its difficult to get to the arena with the rush hour traffic, so individual fans dont buy too many season tickets. But I tell you what in recent years it has gotten better for the Devils, but its still not 100% good. I just posted the proximity of the arena to NYC to let you know that it is more blend in than you think. "NJ" teams arent as popular in "NY" as the other way around because "NJ" teams have always sucked until recently. The Nets finally had a good season just last year. I never understood the NY vs NJ thing specially when some things in NJ are closer to Manhattan than some "NY" things. My friend for instance always thought I lived out in the sticks somewhere cause I said I lived in NJ. But when she came over my house one day it was closer and quicker to get to than her house in Queens from Manhattan. Its all ridiculous really.
