Goff in DC is reporting that the CRapids are signing him. Oh joy - just what we need - Fish in LA and Gomez in Colorado http://blog.washingtonpost.com/soccerinsider/2008/02/gomez_rapids_closing_in_on_dea.html
Re: C Gomez rumored to no longer be available This team will get so many arse whippings this season. Some changes definately need to be made and they aren't..What a shame. Best facilty in the MLS and most mundane team going..Gonna be a long summer....
Re: C Gomez rumored to no longer be available if Goff is reporting it, why does the thread say rumored? not sure why this is so difficult... a rumor is when some guy at the water cooler in your office says his cousin is a hair dresser in Colorado and he does the hair of someone in the Rapids ticket office who says Gomez is coming to Colorado. When Goff REPORTS something, it's not a rumor. sorry pet peeve, but that annoys the crap out of me. It's like there's no difference between a well respected reporter like Goff and some random poster on the internet. If it had been on MLS rumors I could understand saying rumor.
Re: C Gomez rumored to no longer be available Even though Goff has missed on a couple of his scoops, you make a good point. Thread title changed.
Re: C Gomez rumored to no longer be available Goff rules. His blog should be bookmarked on everyone's computer. Check it every day.
There is always a silver lining. For instance, last season, due to moves made by the FO, FCD got worse. The reward? FCD will not have to play in the Stupid League, a meaningless tournament that adds games in the middle of the season when the team needs to be resting for MLS games. Now, the FO has decided that third was not good enough. There is routh and fifth to consider. Well, in signing Gomez, Colorado will give the FCD FO what it wants. A YSA. The silver lining here is we can decide what we will do during the playoffs right now. FCD will not be playing. Thereby avoiding the first round out. Dead but dreaming, Scipio Diabolus, vox fatum. Contra. SGLF
Good point Buzz - I only said rumored because Goff stated it was not yet a done deal - not lack of respect for the source. El Jeffe - thanks for fixing the title!
"Stupid League". Interesting. Even though that was a part of Blanco's (and then Davino's) evaluation of the league when they decided to come over? How easy it seems that people forget that the biggest part of SuperLiga was to play Mexican teams to show we could both in terms of proving ourselves to the fans and soccer people, but also to challenge ourselves to play at that level.
Plus it gave the FCD front office the chance to soak their season ticket holders, while other teams were foolishly including Superliga tickets in the season ticket packages.
ah well then that's reporting a almost done deal, or close to done deal. Still not rumor. thanks jefe for fixing it. carry on.
I'm so sick of people bitching about the FO over stupid shit like this. If you didn't want to pay for the Superliga tickets, then dont pay for it and sit your ass at home. Soccer is a BUSINESS, some organizations work differently than others. Each person supports there respective team differently, and while there are some of you that sit here and bitch about not wanting to pay for Superliga matches or think that the FO is "soaking their season ticket holders", alot of people are out at PHP supporting their club, either monetarily, vocally, or both. Hooray for you being a season ticket holder, and I completely understand that there are people who support their team by using alot of their flexible income on tickets/driving out to PHP. Yes you do have a right to criticize the club, but soccer is in the entertainment industry, and is into making money. Our FO does not go out of their way to abuse us like you insinuate they do. This is not an attack on you at all, ElJefe, but rather it reminded me about how i wanted to speak to those who did bitch about the Superliga tickets
You could easily make an argument that for the Galaxy game they did. I'm not mad at the FO for the way they handled Superliga simply because Hitch has all but come out and completely admitted that they kind of bungled the whole situation and would do things much differently in the future, so it's a lesson learned, but there was definately some mistakes made there.
So, because we understand the competitive sports market that FCD exists in, AND we desperately want FCD to be successful we are a bunch of "bitchers"?? Whatever.
I have no idea why we're talking about SuperLiga here, but SuperLiga is a good thing. as is the new CONCACAF Champion's League. as is the USOC. as is lengthening the MLS season.
You are still reading my posts. I am honored. I have always called it the Stupid League, since I first heard of it. It adds games that mean nothing to the big prizes: MLS Cup, Supporters's Shield, and the US Open Cup. The games are the hottest part of the year, sapping the players FCD needs to make a move in the middle of the season. To avoid the typical swoon. To their credit, FCD managed not to get back into the Stupid League. Here is one thing I did not forget. You posted the purpose of the Stupid League was to get fans of Mexican teams to see and support MLS teams. Since this did not work, now you have another reason. MLS teams already know they can play with the Mexican teams. There are alwasy chances for friendlies. Is there not a partnership with Tigres? There is no chance to stop in Mexico City on the way to, or the way back from Brazil for a tussle with Club America, UNAM, or Rayos? It may not be easy, but you see where I am going. Further, having spoken with some of my friends involved in Mexican sports that teams like coming to the US, reconnecting with fans in El Norte, and selling more merchandise here. There are plenty of ways to test MLS clubs against Mexican competition, without tiring the players in a meaningless tournament. Dead but dreaming, Scipio Diabolus, vox fatum. Contra. SGLF
I always said it was getting MLS on a bigger stage, to prove our worth both on the field and in the stands. And while it may not have worked here as well in some ways - although I think we certainly showed we could play with Pachuca (eventual champions) and Chivas (recent Mexican League champions) - in other venues it sure did. Houston had a phenominal run - playing big games against big opponents in front of big crowds. A friendly isn't going to be taken as seriously as a game For Something. SuperLiga was for a million dollars - definitely not your average friendly. And considering the lack of or marginal success MLS teams have had in the CONCACAF tournament matches, finding a better way than playing Mexican teams in the middle of their season why MLS teams were just getting together was imperative to playing competitive matches where people were watching. Demeaning? Ask Arturo Alvarez if playing in SuperLiga last year was demeaning. I'd love to hear what he has to say about it. I mean, really, did you watch the games? Seemed to me that the Dallas players played with more drive and desire in the games v. the Mexican clubs than they did all season other than the USOC and playoffs. I'd be curious to hear what other people thought about that.
If and when CONCACAF gets their Champions League thing going the Superliga will become the Superflousliga and should die a slow death. Just my opinion.
I actually thought that those games were some of the best games I attended last year. Goals, atmosphere, intensity inside a tournament structure were far better than any mostly meaningless mid summer mls game to me. Yes I recognize that it could impact the Supporter's Sheild and playoff rankings. Hopefully we can get back in it next year and eventually a real Champions League will take shape.
I don't think so - not when (A) it could be the tournament that replaces/supplements InterLiga as far as Copa Libertadores (rumored) and (B) is specifically Mexico-MLS. A 24 team tournament where a third are MLS and Mexico v. all MLS and Mexico? Of course, if/when the CONCACAF tournament gets to a really high level in terms of payout, prestige, etc., then yes. But it isn't there yet.
No, it isn't, but neither is the Superliga a "replacement/supplement" to Interliga yet. So I dont' think it's very geniune argument to be comparing one hypothetical while ignoring another, equally valid, hypothetical.
SuperLiga has a better payout than either InterLiga or the proposed CCL. That alone says it has some viability legs. Hey, if CCL raises the bar, then maybe so. But if all you're talking about is just following through with their current plan - I don't think that is good enough and SuperLiga will still be worth it.
Agreed, but both the Interliga and the CCL offer a place in a much more prestigious tournament as a prize, the Superliga doesn't. Really? A true round robin tournament to determine a true Continental champion...you don't think that offers something of interest? Interesting. The Mexican fans aren't going to see the legitimacy of the SuperLiga if it continues to be played entirely at US venues.
The point is that Interliga (a SUM event) can easily be transitioned into SuperLiga so as to integrate MLS into playing for Copa Libertadores. Compare the payout for the CCL to SuperLiga. Good point about the US venue note, although they don't seem to be complaining about USA-Mexico being in the US more often than not.
The payout of the CCL is a spot in the FIFA Club World Championships, Kevin. $1 Million is chump change to Mexican clubs...and the supporters' don't care about that. The fans care about winning tournaments that MEAN something. Superliga, right now, doesn't really mean anything. As far as most of them are concerned, judging by what I've read here on BS, it's just another set of exhibitions. If your point is which is going to draw in the Mexican fans more....your argument for the Superliga isn't winning me over. They don't? I beg to differ. First of all, those games are friendlies....again, they don't mean anything in reality. Secondly I have read multiple complaints about that.
