This doesn’t seem ideal for Chris. Even if they sell Guehi, do they really need to prioritize a CB?

Would be shocked if Guehi isn't sold this offseason. So I would assume the priority of another CB is to replace his spot. Chris should be good because Glasner plays a 3 back.

    https://thepalaceway.com/news/crystal-palace-interested-in-chadi-riad-and-lacroix

"20-year-old centre-back Chadi Riad from Real Betis"
"he club are believed to want to sign him to improve their depth at centre-back and as an option for the future, rather than as a direct replacement for the likely-to-depart Marc Guehi."

"Crystal Palace also have long-term interest in Maxence Lacroix, who played under Oliver Glasner at Wolfsburg."
"...Palace's desire for Lacroix, who is seen as a like-for-like Guehi replacement"

Richards is a lock starter for them imo. If not always at CB, somewhere in the back half of the pitch. I think they see him as an ascending young player that will increase his value exponentially by the end of next season if he has good health.

Just vibes but those are the vibes I'm feeling based on their fan sites and stuff.

They've been playing three atb with richards, andersen, and clyne.

If Guehi goes, they really do need another competent CB because clyne is more of a rb/wb type.

Guehi has 2 years left on his deal and has refused to sign a new contract. He's long had his eyes out the door. His long injury opened up room for Chris who preformed excellently for Glassner. Chris has a spot, especially since Glassner prefers three at the back. New kid will fill a hole or at worst be 4th choice. But it seems all but definite that Guehi will be gone.

Beyond that the buy is pretty typical Palace these days. Former Barca academy player, on loan starter at Real Betis, 20 year old Moroccan international who's cheap by Premier league standards. Whether starter or first off the bench he's going to get game time and Palace need depth with Tompkins also out of contract.

Matt Woosnam, who covers Crystal Palace for the Athletic, put out a detailed story on Richards today discussing the national team (including how he felt missing the World Cup) and Crystal Palace:

Richards on whether he "thrived" in the midfield role that he played in the first few months in which he fully broke into the Palace team:

His first standout moment in the Premier League, a season earlier:

About that Richards article…toward the end there was one of those English English vs American English moments. I highly doubt Richards described London as “homely.” He almost certainly said “homey” but guys, no way he said London is like an unattractive spinster aunt. Lol

Played against the Naval Academy in college.

They have a nice little facility on the water. Looks like they aren’t using that facility today.

Apparently played all of a 1-1 draw. Guehi gets the most blame for the goal conceded, fans pretty happy with the full squad outing on Twitter. Seems like he may start the season opener next Sunday.

Richards starts! Palace hosting West Ham. Edit: Just noticing that Andersen is out, so Guehi moves to the middle, Richards switches to RCB, and Riad joins the lineup at LCB. Edit2: Andersen has transferred to ... Fulham!

Played 82 minutes in a 2-0 loss to West Ham, with the lowest field player ratings on FotMob. Didn't watch it, though.

Getting yanked at 82’ as a CB never a good look even if down and needing a goal

They're playing with a back 3, Guehi is their best CB, and the other CB is left-footed, so Richards is the obvious sub if they're switching formations to push for a goal.

For some reason Richards is better on the left than the right.
