Ok, it was only a matter of time, since he comes up in damn near every single thread that has to do with a game. Let everyone know where you stand on the Chris Brown issue. Do you love the fact that he gets in position to score goals all the time? Or do you despise the fact that even though he should have about 7 goals this season he's yet again under performing? Is he fast, kinda fast, above average fast, sorta fast but not really, average speed, sorta slow, Llamosa slow or turtle pace slow??? Do you think his streak of consecutive appearances is warrented? Moreso do you think his streak will continue? Lets have it, everyone seems to have an opinion, lets get them all in the same thread and see what educated Wizards fans (and outsiders as well) think about the Wizards overly average striker.
Good speed, terrible footwork, terrible finishing, good at being in the right place at right time. He should never start considering the alternatives. He is a somewhat talented underachiever who disappears during large chunks of the game and blows excellent chances. Game streak is warranted since he has versatility as to what positions he can play (sub only). One thing he doesn't get much credit for is the opportunities he creates. Sure he blows a lot of them but with another player we may not even get those shots. Verdict-Regular bench sub
Seems to me that he is at his best when he comes off the bench in the last 15-20 minutes or so. He also has problems(obviously) with ball control. If there is a difficult goal to score Browny always seems to get those, however it you put him in front of an empty net or ono on one with the GK, he puts it wide or over the bar. I think he is best used off the bench and can be a very good super sub at times.
Brown is a terrible finisher, but he is a decent passing forward. He seems to be in the right place at the right time for the goal but then chokes when he has the ball at his feet. Now put the ball on his head and it seems to be a totally different story. He is accurate, timely and proven to score goals. I think the new rule should be, if Brownie is in a scoring position and you pass the ball to him, aim for his head and not his feet.
Like I said in another thread when Brown came up. Watching Brown shoot on goal is like trying to push the same poles of two different magnets together. They just always seem to miss each other. I dont know if I all together agree with the "super sub" role. If a player is going to need 10 SOG to get one goal would you want him out there for 90 minutes or 20? Thats not to say I think he should be a starter. It is to say that a "super sub" should score at a better strike rate than a starter, not worse.
I'd personally rather see Armstrong. He's just as versatile as Brown, only w/ more talent. Although I'd probably give Brownie the edge as far as work rate is concerned.
Brown always seems to come up with a goal when its needed (i.e. home opener and rochester), so I could never really hate him. He does work pretty hard and he cares, thats also a good thing. Hes always in a good position to score, but he never does. To sum it up I think hes a good sub, but I dont think he should ever beat out Wolff or Igor and be a starter.
Lets face it the kid has hustle. The Brown we see at games is not the same Brown that Gansler sees in practice. He has a blistering shot, every shot is a rocket. His speed is slightly above average, meaning he can out run older defenders. He is good with his head. Which is something this team lacks. He justly has earned the #3 forward position. I want him to be the first sub at that position. I want him to come off the bench and score 5 more goals this season and up his stock. Then I want us to trade him for a midfeilder in the offseason. All in all he did his job till people recovered from their injuries. His new job is to come off the bench add some spark and score goals.
what he said. Except sometimes, i am literally amazed at his inability to score goals. Its like...god gave Van nistelrooy, Ronaldo, Raul, and crespo the supernatural ability to simply score goals, but he gave Chris brown the exact opposite. I dont want to hate him, but at times, like, say, immediatley following the NE away game, its hard not to.
True, but its pretty common knowledge that Brown rips it up in the preseason and practice and earns Ganslers praise. Then he steps within the white lines and all his ability to finish is ripped out of him. Maybe he needs to do some religious thing like Meola (the Catholic cross) when he crosses the lines. Something, anything, its gotta change.
Brown doesn't cut it I think he's be given enough time to prove himself and he has failed. Miserably. He just doesn't have what it takes to perform at a higher level. He has had plenty of opportunities, gets on a short streak and then it ends. Yes, he has scored one or two important goals in his time. But not enough. If he was creating goals for others this would be ok, if he was causing other teams to worry about him and providing space for others that would be ok too. But he fails on all those accounts. He is in as a finisher, he doesn't finish, simple as that. He wouldn't even make my super-sub list. With a full healthy squad I'd have Armstrong and Arnaud ahead of him on the bench. [1970s liverpool reference]Davey Fairclough he is not. [/liverpool reference]
I have no idea why he can't finish. he does have a rocket shot and he's good in the air. but his first touch isn't good. Like I said in an earlier post, I think he's No.3 FW and sits when wolff and simu are healthy, which has been just the metrostars game so far. I think underacheiver is a bad label b/c he seems to me not to be super talented. but he makes up for it with smarts and hustle and a good ability to be in the right place a lot of the time. Like we found out in '99, if he's the key to the offense, we're awful. But as a role player, he's valuable and the team is good. I'm not sold at all on arnaud. one nice goal, but I need to see him for more than a start. In fact, I can't even remember him touching the ball after he scored saturday.
I have never liked Chris Brown. I shudder every time I see him ready to sub in. He never performs well, and scores one lucky goal for every 10 point-blank shots. We all saw what Davy Arnaud can do with a little bit of playing time: I thought he was excellent against the Metros, and what a shot against Howard (can you say goal of the week?) Bench Brownie forever!
I totally agree. His goal was sweet (even better on MLS wrap) but I'm not ready to call him the second coming of Tommy Resoner just yet. I hope he continues to play well but I would still try to start Armstrong over him.
Maybe Chris is trying to hard in game situations, he wouldn't be the 1st player to have that happen to him. Sometimes, a player is his worst enemy when he tries to hard. GO WIZZARDS
Praising Arnaud for one shot while bashing Brown is wrong. I can think of at least two Brown goals last year that were of similar quality to Arnaud's or maybe better. Part of Brown's problem has to be mental. He needs to show more of an iron nerve at times, while other times he is lethal. I like some of the runs he makes. Thats why I think he has to score to truly be effective because he seems to fancy himself as a poacher.
Well, I tried to hold my tongue about Brown - for a change - but after that Tommy Reasoner reference...well now I've GOTTA jump in!! As far as my opinion of Brown? I think about 15,000 people heard me voice my position, so writing it would seem redundant. But what I WILL say is, don't praise the guy for "creating opportunities". That's a term given to proven chokers, who defenders recognize and deservidely leave alone. Now think like I do...from a defender's point of view. If Brown scores 1 out of 20 shots, you'd be wise to ignore him and focus the extra attention on keeping the ball away from a Preki-type player with much better numbers. Now, Brown will be the open target, but if you play the odds - he'll miss. And by keeping the ball of Preki's feet...the defender has done his job.
my brother and i find that by discussing the size of his jaw, we can tolerate his repeated failures a little more. i know, what a dumb post. seriously though, he is mind numbing. i used to yell some choice words when he'd mess up. i've lost the urge to do that anymore; i just sit and shake my head, cause i know everyone else, but bob, understands my pain.
It's 1 in 12, but who's counting? OK, I will. BTW, Kopite, all numbers are not by definition useless. PLAYER-----------G A PTS SH SOG Preki--------------6 3 15 39 15 Simutenkov-------3 1 7 11 7 Brown------------2 2 6 24 11 Klein--------------2 2 6 9 3 Quill--------------2 2 6 11 4 Conrad-----------1 1 3 5 3 Wolff-------------1 1 3 5 5 Arnaud-----------1 0 2 2 2 Gomez------------0 2 2 19 5 MLS-------------110G----1100SH--500SOG You can do some easy math and get the league averages and compare them to Brown. He's only slightly below MLS AVG in both shots scored and shots on goal scored. The numbers support using Brown off the bench. Numbers tell a story, but never the whole story. With the quality of the shots Brown's put on frame the last 2 games, I'd think seriously about giving him another start and tell Brown point blank and in a positive way that he's a sub until he converts the chances. Then I would put Simu next of Wolff, but that's me. It's just plain silly to speak of trading him. No way in God's Green Earth should a player who can create the sheer vollumn of chances in his minutes ever be let go. He'll come back to bury you more often than not. More importantly, the one person to pick on as an offensive black hole would more accurately be Gomez. (It also explains why him stepping in for a retired Preki is just the purist of misplaced optomism) In addition to taking the chances of a forward, he never puts it on frame, much less in the net. The only redeeming quality is that the majority of his shots come early and from deep, hopefully by design. Still, he needs to force a save now and then. Gomez is a goal kick waiting to happen. Not such a big deal on smaller fields like SJ and DAL. The cumulative penalty of wasted runs is much more punitive on a field like LA's.
Exactly, numbers dont take into account the "quality" of the chance. Of Brown's SOG this season he's missed 9 times. Of the top of my head I can remember thinking at least 5 times that he should have scored. He got stoned from 12 yards by Adin Brown and by Jolley off the line last week (although he was offside so the shot didnt go in the books.) What I'm trying to say is that numbers are nice, but we've all watched with our own eyes and as kcscsupporter said we just set and shake our heads these days.
Not sure whether to take this bait or not ... Judging Brown is easy. Watch him play, form a judgment. Numbers can provide an insight, but comparing a forward's shots on goal success with a defensive midfield player's success is ridiculous. Dave, I do believe you rely on numbers a little too much, but this is not a personal thing, that's your style. I'll live with it I tend to rely on nearly 40 years of watching the game live and in person and relying on my own opinion and instinct. (yeh, I really am that old!) With that said, I think Brown is an average player who has reached his highest point already and doesn't have what it takes to go the next level. I think season by season MLS is surpassing him and he'll slide further and further down the depth charts. Then he can play indoor
Re: Re: Chris Brown [R] LOL! (I couldn't resist after the McKeon tirade Tom went on last week) Anyway, this is about Brown. I think Kopite (can you please explain the meaning and pronounciation of your screen name? Its been a topic of discussion and debate more than once) hit the nail on the head. Man, does Gomez suck at shooting or what? And to think the team lets him take free kicks once in a while.
I would've traded Dante Washingtion for him in a second. As far as chances are concerned I think you better look at whose behind him - Preki & Klein, with Simu being a workrate forward stretching space for him; thats why there's chances. I gotta go with Kopite on this. There is more facets to the sucktitude of his game than his shots (mostly missed sitters). He doesn't make intelligent runs, and doesn't have the speed or workrate that the rest of the team does. He gives up on passes that aren't right to him (i.e. Onandi). Even his assist for Preki a few games ago was essentially Preki pouncing on his own pass to Brown as Chirs stone footed it at the top of the box. I think part of it is mental with him, he's entirely too serious and composed on the field. You can't say he's enjoying the game experience nor can you tell that there is any passion/fire there like you see in most forwards. Just look at Wolff getting a card early last game 20 yards out from our own goal on the sideline. That's someone who came to play. I think Andy Mead said it best with his first post of the KC @ NE post game thread. "Chris Brown - sigh...." (should be my sig)
