Tony Sannea = A-league quality forward with great phisical gifts and status as Arena pet Chris Albright = A-league quality forward with great phisical gifts and status as Arena pet
then Arena must be a bona fide genius because he got a great world-cup performance out of Tony. I hope Arena has a few more such "pets" up his sleeve. I was one who questioned Sanneh's ability, but the World Cup is put up or shut up time... and Tony shut all the critics up.
if you do not notice the difference in quality between these two, you should just sit still and watch quietly. do not speak, do not offer opinions, they just make you look stupid.
I thought you were all being a little harsh in your criticism here. I read the initial thread and thought it was pretty funny at first glance. I don't think he was really serious. Although i could be wrong.
The idea of developing Chris Albright into a defender is not stupid. He clearly brings a lot of hustle, size, speed and workrate to the game. He's proven that he'll never be an adequate finisher against professional-level defenders but he can still make substantial contributions to the game. But before Albright gets any more than theoretical "what if?" consideration as a defender in the USMNT player pool, he should prove himself as a defender at the MLS level. Then,if Arena wants a big, strong defender and is concerned about Sanneh or Klein's longterm viability for 2006, plugging Albright into the backline somewhere would make sense.
You don't joke about putting Albright anywhere on the U.S. team! you can't blame people for overreacting and for the panic!
This idea is not new on these boards. A few years ago, somebody brought it up. I thought it an intriguing idea then. However, in the intervening years, Albright has shown that he doesn't have the brain for international soccer. He simply doesn't have a very good feel for the game, which is why, for all his speed, fitness and work-rate, he'll never be a right back for the nats.
is Albright even in MLS still? Last I knew he was with LA but I haven't heard anything recently about him. I agree with the naysayers. Albright should be only on the pitch to pick up the discarded practice penneys.
Sanneh was the US MVP in WC 2002. He was solid on defense and he made some great runs on offense. I loved watching him play forward in the last 20 minutes of the Germany match.
Before Albright makes the jump to US Right Back, he needs to prove that he's more than an average at best MLS player. I suggested a few times that he be the United right back for a while, for the same reasons stated above: work rate, speed, ability in the air. True, he's not world class in any of these criteria, but he's a decent combination. LA ought to work with him in this position. It would help their team flexibility, and possibly ressurect Albright's career.
