I'm about to do what the title says. I need to choose a Bundesliga team from scratch, because I want to start fresh with my fandoms. I think I'm going to do the same for La Liga Primera of Spain and Serie A of Italy.

I've cheered against teams for extremely petty reasons, and they've come back to bite me on the butt. (The reasons, not the teams!) I've cheered for teams for the same petty reasons. I don't think I can cheer for Bayern in good conscience because I've already got one theoretical bandwagon on my record (Chelsea). And I live in Boston, so it's perfectly acceptable for me to like the New England Revolution ;)

So I'm going to put the names of the 18 Bundesliga teams and the top five (or maybe six) 2. Bundesliga teams in a hat, and choose one from there, randomly. Unless someone can convince me otherwise.

Hoffenheim. All of their fans 'chose' their club exactly the same way, so you wouldn't stand out... :)

Choosing a team doesn´t work, you must be chosen by a team to become a fan. People, who chooses their team fall apart from it, when the success ends, while fans stand to their club in good as well as in bad times (that doesn´t exclude a
critical opinion, when it doesn´t run).

So if I were you I would go to a pub in Boston, that broadcasts Bundesliga, watch some BL matchdays and get chosen by a team. A nice side effect is, that you will propably find some other lads interested in Bundesliga football.

BTw, did anyone see the Beck video on the DFB page?
What a bandwagoner. He said he always used to support the teams that were successfull like Bayern and ManU.

    Made me gulp.

I didn't find the video but I doubt this is about gloryhunting, it's probably about a young footballer being excited about teams which play great football/have great talent. A perfectly valid approach.

That way you're more likely to become attached to a specific team of players (+coach), not to a club. Speaking from experience.

ooh, I could use a nice lad who's into Bundesliga football ;)

I have GolTV, which is seemingly the only way to watch the league here, but it seems they mostly play Bayern/Bremen/Schalke/Dortmund with the occasional Hoffenheim thrown in. Old Lady Hertha, are there any pubs around here that show the BL so I could watch with other people? The bar across the street from me has GolTV but I've only ever seen one other person there watching.

And yes, I see a spot for myself on the Hoffenheim bandwagon...

No real idea about any bars. Usually I go for streams or a relative empty bar where they can change the channel for me. :D

It must be pretty damn empty if they voluntarily switch to a Hertha match... :p

Never actually seen a Hertha match at a bar, usually stream it at home. Happens quite a bit for Everton matches though, they've been on the TV quite a bit and I usually get a nice hearty breakfast with Everton. Not too shabby :) Might do it for Hertha-Bayern Saturday too.

You could always do research on the various teams and see if the history of a certain club really captivates you. I guess if you have German heritage, you could do research and find out where your family is originally from and then support the club closest to that location.

Just a few ideas that came to mind. :)

I like how TSG Hoffenheim is the new bandwagon lol. I'd go with what Legion said and follow the bloodline to your German club.

Okay, if I go by my heritage - I'm not German, but my last name is - and choose a team based loosely on THAT, I'd end up with Karlsruher. Or Stuttgart if I fudged it a bit.

VfB and KSC are bitter rivals, so there's no having both...haha. I'd personally suggest KSC, but that's because they have a friendship with Hertha. ;)

    Stuttgart!!!

    Stuttgart!!!

No one will EVER accuse you of bandwagoning if you choose them!

They are the Miami Dolphins of the Bundesliga. A team that always shows great promise, and then always whizzes it down their legs.....(though there was this one time a couple years ago....)

Plus, as an American military man who was previously stationed in Stuttgart (and will be again in May! Hooray!) the VfB fans were a welcoming bunch.....

I've also found it's a really good way to discover if someone you see wearing an FC Bayern shirt on the streets of the U.S. is REALLY a Bundesliga fan, or if they just bought the Bayern shirt because it was the soccer shirt on sale that day.

REAL Bayern fans look at you like they just sucked a lemon when you say you are a VfB fan.........fake ones just say "who?" "where?"....

I'd put Hanover in there... Not bandwaggoning neither, and two Yanks on the squad.
