Real Madrid to offer Ajax player-plus-cash for Chivu
    tribalfootball.com - March 4, 2003

Real Madrid are prepared to offer Ajax a cash-plus-player swap for captain Cristian Chivu.
Real sports chief Jorge Valdano has been in regular contact with Ajax officials for the past year about Chivu's situation and is now pressing to secure a deal for the Romanian.

AC Milan dropped - publicly at least - their interest in Chivu yesterday, leaving the path clear for Real.

The Spanish giants would prefer to pay less than the £14 million that Ajax are demanding and reports last night suggested Valdano was willing to add one of the club's top young players to bring down the price.

    ---

AC Milan had reportedly offered 32 million euros.

If he has to go, he has to go. But not for scratch. We want big money dammit! A nice player could be usefull for Ajax too though.

But all in all I'd rather see Chivu stay.

    Man, this should so happen.

I haven't read any reports about Madrid's interest in Chivu yet apart from some rumors (if it isn't on Marca or VIPlanet, I take any news with a grain of salt) the last ones I saw where pointing more in the direction of Kaka though...but it's clear to everybody that they need another centre back. Now that both Helguera and Hierro are injured they're going to get a player from their junior team to play for God's sake.

And it probably won't be this player if they decide to swap, but Ajax sure as Hell wouldn't hurt itself by getting Portillo to Amsterdam with the whole 'we need another attacker' situation going on now. Or Morientes for that matter, ignoring the fact that both will probably be too expensive.

Well if Real would throw Morientes into the deal I could kinda see this trade happen. Ajax is lacking strikers and Morientes has overstayed his welcome.

Your 2 birds with one stone.

Though his salary demands mite me a deterrent for this deal.

I just doubt Ajax would take a player of Morientes' salary (and age).

Ajax would probably get (and want) a youngster.

Plus there are rumors, Zlatan Ibrahimovic moving to either Italy or Germany, that leaves what, Mido up front? Tote is a good finisher it could be useful for Ajax.

Zlatan will probably stay for at least another season, I think I've read somewhere that he has pretty much said as much....although I guess you can never underestimate the power of the allmighty Euro.

It's not going to be Mido up front next year...he's been demoted to the reserves and the club is going to try to off-load him after the season.

I thought Zlatan signed a new deal? Or are the talks still going on?

Yeah I've read that about Mido, maybe if he holds a EU passport (I dont know if he has one!?) some big club could try to grab him.

    Oscar,

FWIW Marca reported Real Madrid's interest in Chivu this past August (when I was last in Spain). I read Marca online everyday and have not seen anything since.

realistically without being biased, will Chivu get that much of a better offer to stay with Ajax for one more year? i mean i really want him to stay but i just want to know the chances of him staying and the incentives for him in doing so.

In Europe (at least) there still IS more than money. The idea is losing ground fast, but it's still out there.

Chivu might stay to reach a sense of accomplishment in a sport that is not called a teamsport for nothing. He might stay to help build a new strong Ajax that could be a serious CL contender. This process would take about two or three years (with CL play), and him sticking around for one or two would sure help.

Besides that, Chivu still makes too much defending mistakes. Nothing wrong with that, but it does mean that he can still learn at Ajax.

Mind you, Chivu has never said he wants to go away, on the contrary. It's the Ajax board that want him to go so they can grab the dough.

i dont know about that AFCA - milan and real have both commented in the last two days that the AJAX price for CC is too steep for them - maybe the tag has been marked up- itd be nice to have him around another year

and i heard a rumour that AJAX may bring in heerenveen striker denneboom (22 years old, 9 G)

They tried to get Rick Hoogendorp from RKC, but it seems that RKC wanted more dough than Ajax wanted to spend (all yesterday news).

The Denneboom has also been mentioned a couple of times.

Arsenal are reportedly showing an interest in Cristian Chivu, the classy Romanian centre-back who impressed for Ajax against the Gunners in two recent Champions League games.

Arsenal are understood to have asked Ajax to be kept informed of the situation regarding Chivu, amid speculation that the Londoners may soon make a bid for the player.

In December Ajax reported interest in Chivu from an unnamed English club, but since then both Real Madrid and AC Milan have confirmed that they are planning summer offers for the 22-year-old.

According to reports, both Real and a clutch of Serie A clubs have become nervous about Arsenal's apparent interest.

Gunners' boss Arsene Wenger has, of course, just seen for himself what Chivu can do. He organised Ajax's defence impressively in the two draws – 1-1 at Highbury and 0-0 in Amsterdam – between the clubs.

Central defence is a weakness in Wenger's squad. The ambitious Matthew Upson was allowed to go to Birmingham City in January, leaving Pascal Cygan and Igors Stepanovs as the club's deputy centre-backs behind Sol Campbell and the 36-year-old Martin Keown, and neither Cygan nor Stepanovs has consistently impressed in the Arsenal first-team.

Chivu is likely to be the one star sold by Ajax in the summer - for a sizeable fee – a s the y bid to hang on to other much admired squad members such as Rafael van der Vaart and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
