It's often been said - rightly or wrongly - American soccer hasn't done well spotting "Hispanic" soccer talent. Looks like Chivas - rightly or wrongly - will be out scouting as much Hispanic talent as possible.

In addition to all the other debates raging about Chivas, it's interesting to speculate if Chivas can dig up a lot of new talent living in the U.S. that otherwise wouldn't be unearthed by MLS, U-23s or U-20s, college, etc.

    You can trust them.

Club America just had tryouts. They bought a tour bus and travel all 32 Mexicans states (inclduding the capital) and toured 8 US cities. Kids had to be between 14 and 19.

The project was called Futuro Aguila (Future Eagle).

A sum up of the tryouts.

Kilometers the caravan traveled - 21, 504 Kms.

Duration of the recruitment project - 135 days

No. of youths evaluated - 6,000+ players

No. of players chosen during preliminary tryouts - 300

No. of players chosen to participate the final round of tryouts - 25 (all 25 were then flown to Mexico City, stayed 2 weeks where they went physical, psychological, and tactical examinations. 12 made the final cut and will be are with America's reserve team. 2 of them were immediately added America's professional reserve team.

Out of the 25 that participated in the final round, 5 were from the US including one american

I remember when they came to houston during the late summer, they were hundred of young players wanting to tryout. And not all were Mexican or Mexican American. There were some central Americans, South Americans, Americans, Africans, Middle Easterners as well. For some odd reason, there was a communication problem with the africans and middle easterners.

If I recall, after phase 2 of the tryouts, there was 1 argie, 8 americans of mexican descent, 3 mexicans, one american.

due the the success of futura aguila, more cities have asked America to go to thier cities in the US.

after seeing what a success it had been, Cruz Azul and Pumas are also going to have a similar project. They will travel throughout Mexico and various regions of the US

If chivas is any where near that kind of system and knows how to do it.....22 players will be found in 10 cities along, do not mind 135.

THAT IS THE KIND OF ORGANIZATION AND SYSTEMS THAT MLS is getting associated with!

Boy....I recall the tryouts by the mutiny in tampa Bay..... that was short of resources and planning.

lest all welcome the new ideas: CHIVAS USA (hey, you behind that desk, you do not have to root for them)

These quotes are translated from an article in La Opinion so I'd take it all with a grain of salt.

Chivas is using the Dutch Ajax Method.. I think we have about three coaches/scouts currently working with Chivas reserves all ex Ajax..

I remeber the Try outs the L.A Glaxy had before the start of their first season. If you ask me it was all a scam to hype up the club. I dobnt think they really drafted any players from that try out..

It's a good program, good for MLS. It'll potentially raise the standards of youth development in the league. But I'm guessing that Chivas will have the option of having players play with their MFL team, or, um, go into the MLS draft system. Which is no choice at all.

Maybe this is what Vergara is after all along. He feels he can monopolize the Latin American youth player market, which will have a great positive effect on his MFL team. He sees the MLS team, itself, as a break even venture.

Still, I have to say that I have fears. Because of his MFL team, this makes financial sense for Vergara. As the league is set up now, it doesn't make sense for MLS teams.

One last question...of the New Blood players, how likely are they to play for the US Nats vs. the Mexican Nats (assuming the players in question are good enough to choose.) I think it's obvious this could create tension from the kind of people who were freaking out about Chivas USA.

Well if the outcome are guys who would have never played for either before Chivas, now get to play for Mexico after, it pains me to say this, but fair play to Mexico and Chivas. If we weren't developing the talent, it's hard for us to complain when someone else comes along and does so for their own benefit.

This really is the biggest wait and see issue of them all. Most notably what happens when Chivas happens upon a 15 year old kid they want to sign and the MLS rules won't let it happen. It does appear he'd head for Mexico in such a case.

So after 135 days and 13,000 miles they found 12 practice scrubs.

I guess this is an efficient allocation of resources.

    13 kilometers, not miles.

there were at 15 kids residing in the US that made final cuts of each respective phase. 5 out of 25 made the final cut. That means 1 out of 5 were either from the US or US born. and out of the final 12, 2 of them made it. visiting 8 cities and getting 15 potential players and ending up with 2 is not bad.

you can roll your eyes all you want and you can take merit away from the program, by all means.. but it surely beat the shyt out of yuppy select teams that mommy and daddy put together just so thier kid can be a select all-star. You arent dealing with soccer moms and daddy forking out $ to the coach just for sonny boy to be on the team.

21000 km = 13,000 miles. Do the math again.

Or they could have said that at each US city we will take the 'best' 2 guys (8 US cities, 15 kids). Out of all that they got 2 that may or may not make the senior team. I still say much ado about nothing.

Here's what one suburban soccer mommy's boy did:

I once read an article with Donovans mom saying that she couldnt afford to pay the select team or ODP teams where Donovan played at and that he was sponsered or something along the lines. Coincidentally she also talked about many Mexican kids that played alongside Donovan and were not Lucky to get sponsered or could not afford to stay on the select teams..

If he's is just doing it for his MFL team, then why would he go to the trouble of setting up an MLS team at all then? He could just do what Club America did and go on a scouting tour or just set up permanent camps in the US.

    Rest your worries!

I do not know why no one set that comment straight: CHIVAS IN THE MFL, BY TRADITION, ONLY PLAYS AND HIRES MEXICAN BORN PLAYERS.....backhome they will not take them, besides, the development of a player for export to Mexico from the USA has not happen very often (other than daniel Hernandez and koiman (SP) 10 yrs ago)

If Vergara wants to sell them to a higher price, FINE, they still american born and available to the USA national team, or not?

BTW, making most likely more money that in MLS, gaining experience and making the usians brag about how good that Kid was or is

Great point. Maybe if Chivas (or America, or Pumas, etc.) finds a kid or two for Mexico that the USSF would've wanted, then maybe we'll see a bit more outreach. Who knows. But if MLS and the USSF ain't finding these kids, then they can't gripe if someone else gives them an opportunity. And yeah, yeah, yeah, I understand that the next Ronaldo ain't just sitting out there undiscovered in East LA or SW Houston, but I wouldn't be shocked if a few more useful nat'l pool players could be found.

A cup of coffee that's too hot could probably create tension from the kind of people who were freaking out about Chivas USA. ;)

Unfortunately, people have won multimillion dollar lawsuits because of coffee that's too hot.

Like it or not, you've got to listen to them.

Wait a second. I thought that Chivas is an All Mexican All The Time team? I thought that they will bring 'Mexican flair' to the poor neighbors up north? You mean to tell me that Vergera has SO MUCH faith in Mexican born and trained coaches that he (gasp) hired a Dutch guy and brought over his staff?

I am right. He IS a hypocritical ass.

Go take a look at the results the last 6 times the US played Mexico. Then tell me who the blind squirrel is.

    CUS......your problem blinds your understanding!

look: chivas in MFL is an ALL mexican players, not coaches and system administrators. As many mexican clubs and almost all the national teams.

Argentines have been there before: chivas, Like Ruggiere and Dutch leo benhaker (now with aguilas de america)

vergara Just took over chivas MFL, not even a yr ago, and changes happened but very slowly..... Like adding new talent or getting the BEST coach available (as promised in 2002).....

the Move in costa Rica: same results, Kits free of advertisement and new coach soon as he was the owner. Costa Rican coach BTW....and few, very few roster Moves (they lead that liga by few pts)

I don't have a problem, really. And I still can see (I'm actually wearing my glasses today).
So to remain consistant with Chivas de Saprissa, Chivas de San Diego will hire an American coach and American players?

    Possible but, not necessary!

the man is after the investment only! The deal with serie A: atl de madrid is not dead, and from the get go of the negotiation the Gil family that controls most of the stock on the club, had conditions for him to accept: KEEP INTACT CLUB TRADITIONS (hiring practices and team colors)

But, that is a different story

there is no constant in hiring a coach.....last Month he had a Mexican in Guadalajara, now He promoted from within the organization a Dutch man. And is rumored out there that if they do not make playoffs, some one else will coach in 2004. (no one knows from where or bothers with nationality)

are you Sure the glasses are yours? (just kidding)

that is why is Important to Know the guy, before all this non sense thrown at theis forum.

The soccer part of the guy....if any, CUS first he is about the investment and the possibles returns....

Do you know how he makes his money?

    do you know about Omnilife?

the other day, they were talking trash here about the drinks he promotes.....then they went on a free rant here about Pepsi vs cocacola......wrong again!
