America being another Mexican club would kill that idea. Besides, America may have their own MLS franchise in a year or so, if we are to believe the rumors. If that happens, I wonder if they'd dare call themselves America USA.
Whoever wrote on at the beginnining: "Chivas Angeles"... is messed up. I don't think there will ever be a team nicknamed the Goat Angels. How about Club Deportivo de Los Angeles as their official name (CDLA or CD Los Angeles for short) and then as their nickname "Los Angeles Chivas". Similar to NY/NJ MetroStars. Where almost always the team is called MetroStars, and as their unofficial nickname being Metros. Sykotyk
Re: U.S.Chivas! Anything with Chivas in it is a bad move. Not only do you want this side attracting the hispanic sides but also the anglo-saxon and other ethnic groups.
Re: U.S.Chivas! Nobody's keeping anyone out. Because Vergara may emphasize his marketing to a segment of society MLS hasn't been bothered with does not translate into charging him with disrespecting others.
Re: U.S.Chivas! And the occasional non-latino like myself. My only reason, however, for liking them is because so many people(fellow americans) have gotten their panties all in a bunch because of this team.
The chances of this team being named Chivas at all are highly unlikely considering the above statement. I would bet you won't get a name for the team on Monday and that all the good press and branding that has been built up over the last year will be for naught. Which is a shame. Unless we sign up Chivas Regal as the primary sponsor.
We'll see. Garber said on May 19 "It will be called Chivas USA." Of course, he also said they'd announce all the expansion details "absolutely" no later than the second week of June, so make of that what you will. Bet they do.
Well, I don't disagree that MLS would like to call the team Chivas USA but I don't see how they'll be able to get around the trademark issues with Chivas Regal. I'll take you up on that one. Edit: It's trademark, not copyright. My bad.
If they try to call them Chivas Regal (pronounced shivvas reegal) USA, then you'll have a point. But Cheevas You Ess Ay, I don't think they'll have a problem with. I'm not an attorney, but I think you have to prove that a reasonable person could confuse the two. Ain't no reasonable people here, so we're no help. Done.
I think I read something about Vergera and Chivas Regal strking some deal about the Chivas name last year. I would have to look this up again.
It was a great name, but I think it might rile some folks. San Diego State has had some issues over it's use of the name Aztecs and all high schools in LA City dropped any nicknames with Native American connotations a few years ago.
Ok, so according to the official release, they have not decided on a team name! (thank god) Their name, along with the name for SLC will be announced in August
I don't think of it as winning, just as being right. I will say that I'm glad the league is dragging this out as long as possible. It's a tough time of year content wise and launching three new team names a week after each other would be great marketing to keep the buzz going.
Okay, serious question: Let's forget for a moment that I'm skeptical about how well this is all going to work anyway, but the question is - if MLS and Vergara are counting on Chivas' name recognition making up for the fact that, at the end of the day, this is an MLS team with MLS players (who are likely to be of a certain heritage, but are still MLS players) and that the identification with Chivas is going to be what makes the whole thing work, how can you not have Chivas in the name?
I'm sure they'll have Chivas in their name. It just looks like the whole "Chivas USA" might have been a working title. Now it opens the door to things like "CD Los Angeles" (with Chivas USA as an unofficial nickname) Chivas LA, LA Chivas, ChiLAvas, or whatever. . .
