As I started to search for additional information regarding the signing of Raphael Wicky with Chivas, I found several websites referring to us as Chivas Los Angeles Can this be the first step to our own identity?
Chivas Los Angeles has a nice ring to it, but I doubt there will be a change until they settle their stadium situation, whether they stay @ HDC long term or build their own.
can we drop all this CHIVAS LA b.s.? im not buying the argument that a name change will help with Attendance and blah, blah, blah. L.A. is the only city with two MLS teams. the Galaxy has had about 10 more years to establish a fan base. Chivas is just starting out. PATIENCE PEOPLE! Drop a second team in any MLS city and see how poorly they draw.
Money's not the issue. The owners have money. The problem is MLS doesn't let us spend it. And re: the name change, I think it's important. I know people in this city who LOVE soccer, follow MLS very casually, and still don't know that Chivas USA is in LA. Chivas LA would be so much better than Chivas USA. I know they think it will lessen their nationwide appeal, but I disagree. It's more important to have fans in LA than it is to have fans of the team in Miami or Cleveland. We have to grow the local fanbase, and that is far more likely to happen with "Los Angeles" in the team name.
"And re: the name change, I think it's important. I know people in this city who LOVE soccer, follow MLS very casually, and still don't know that Chivas USA is in LA. Let them know that they play in the same stadium as the Galaxy. How "Casual" are they that they can't put that together? I'm thinking that it's a lot easier to clue them about Carson that it would be to change the name of team. Are these the type of Casual fans that are a name change away from being "die hard" fans? Let them keep going to watch the Galaxy.
not sure if you guys are aware of this or not, but the MLS actually owns the rights to the name Chivas USA. so Chivas USA as a brand in the MLS, is not going anywhere. We are here, in our 4th season - making progress on teh business end. we are here to stay and just like everyone else in the front office( not to be mistaken for coaching staff as many of you do), are looking forward to the day we own are own building and are not a tenant. and commandante, you can have as many banners and flags as you would like. the name will remain the same, the level of investment is here. we will be promoting the team alot more next year. (plans for some outdoor, and english tv, radio and print) were not going anywhere.
Nah ey, jus put it in nootral and let it go down hill an you get der like dat sas! jus fifteen minutes.
I'm not sure what part of "Chivas USA" would ever clue anyone into the fact that the team is based in LA. Please point that out to me, if you would. And tell me - which sounds more like a Los Angeles team: Chivas USA or Chivas LA? Add in the confusion of a Mexican team named Chivas and you have the makings for low attendance and small fanbase. I'm not sure if you know what "casual" means - in this case, I'm referring to the fact that they're not hardcore MLS fans (and hence didn't know that Chivas USA is, in fact, a Los Angeles area soccer team). 99% of non-MLS fans wouldn't be able to tell you where Chivas USA is based. I'm guessing 99% of non-MLS fans could tell you precisely where the Columbus Crew is (or LA Galaxy, or Chicago Fire, or FC Dallas). Do I think that not having Los Angeles in the name of Chivas USA hurts the team's marketing, PR, attendance, and general presence in the city of LA? Of course it does. Yes, it's easier to tell a few people that Chivas USA is based in LA than to actually change the name (thanks for astutely pointing that out, BTW). But that doesn't mean that the lack of our city's name in the club's name isn't effin' retarded.
