Unlike the majority here, I actually liked him for what he was. I also suspect that leaving him at home before the WC was one of Bob's bigger roster mistakes. But there are probably a half-dozen or so I'd choose for a roster before I chose him now, including a few that I'm not plumping for like Wondo.

Ching always, always, always gave you two chances on goal. Two high % chances on goal.

He would turn his man in the box and get on goal and he would pass out of the holding position for a very high percentage shot.

He plays 90min unlike other players and he has a very high soccer IQ.

He is slow. He would sometimes miss his high % shot, but on a team that cant manufacture even 2 high % chances, he would do well. Plus he plays very well with Donovan, Beezer and Dempsey. His passing out of the holding striker position is excellent.

I don't like that Jozy is a 60min player and that Agudelo is so young. Cooper and Ching should be in the discussion. Bob and Bruce were idiots to not play Ching more.

As a big fan of the Big Kahuna, I cannot condone this. Not only would Ching die and therefore be unavailable for the Dynamo, but he probably would not make much of a difference.

Brian Ching is 33. Even if he was an option, he probably doesn't have much shelf life left.

I too was a pretty big fan of Brian Ching and was one of the few people who protected him during World Cup qualifying. He presented good ability to hold the ball under a ridiculous amount of physical duress, not just by putting his body in the way, but by good ball control. His passing and vision was pretty good for a forward and he was of course good in the air. That being said, he does seem to have a problem in front of goal. Edson Buddle, and even Conor Casey have better scoring rates while bringing the same ability to hold the ball up, which is why I'm not as keen on Brian Ching as I used to be. I think he was really given more junk than he deserved on the national team, but I think his time has passed.

That being said, if we ever needed him, I have no doubt that he'd be able to step up and do well.

the fact that chingy is mentioned saddens the state of our forward line. :( how ironic that our usmnt manager was a legendary striker.

Agreed. People are calling for Ching? The Ching everyone criticized Bob Bradley for calling in?

    Unbelievable.

Ching should have been in the 2010 WC team, but his time internationally is passed and we need to look forward.

Did Ching not have any fitness or injury issues prior to WC2010?

It really is remarkable how two faced and full of shit you are. Congrats on that.

Ching played extensively throughout qualifying under Bradley. And Bradley and Ching were widely crucified for it here on BigSoccer. And I'd bet dollars to donuts that you were one of the people leading the crucifixion party.

Ching is/was awesome and he deserves every bit of attention. However its no secret with knee injuries, his share with multiple excursions. One? in College (Gonzaga) and at least 2 in MLS era. He did have to come back from the lower divisions in America. Still he did score some monstrous goals. One of my favorites was Convey 40 yard cross from midfield touchline area in towards PK spot and Ching deflects the power into upper corner. That was just spot on know how... Maybe he'll get some looks in preliminaries of the Olympic team?

do they let you out of the padded cell every 2 weeks?

bradley effed it up by not taking him to the WC and Bruce ADMITTED he effed it up by not putting in ching against italy and ghana.

I have always been a ching supporter. He is hard to watch at times, but if you do the long tail stats on him, he gives you two 90% chances per game which is way better than the 20 10% chances we seem to get.

He has had his typical series against the Union. First match he set up two terrific chances, and in the second match he put it in goal.

set me on ignore from now on because you are trash.

    Gotta love Ching.

The guy is just a competitor. Had he been blessed with better athleticism, he would be an all-time USMNT great. He's an incredibly smart player.

A voice of reason. Yes, I have been a Dynamo supporter since they moved to Houston (full disclosure). But Brian Ching has to be one of the most underrated players in USMNT history. I don't understand the vitriol. He may not be the most athletic player, but he is certainly one of our most intelligent and productive. His positioning is always top-notch. He just brings a cerebral element to the position that we are normally lacking. Just look at the penalty he drew against Mexico a few years ago (too lazy to look it up). It was brilliant positioning and very intelligent play. It was not, however, Lionel Messi or Thierry Henry-calibre, but it certainly had its upside. It was smart football, and we seem to lack that way too often compared with other teams.

Again, I don't understand the vitriol. He played his role as he was asked time after time, for both club and country. Bring him back and let him play that role again, because we don't seem to have much choice at the moment.

I don't understand why people say he is not athletic:

    1. he is great in the air. He is a natural. Behind McHead he is probably the best we have ever had.

    2. He is very strong and well balanced. He is nearly impossible to move from his spot. I bet if you ask some CB's who the most athletic forward in the league is he might show up quite often. He is not fast, but he is quick.

    3. He can be hard to watch at times as he is not the most instinctive player with the ball at his feet, but watch the break away goal against Ecuador where he releases Donovan. Exceptional pass. As long as Altidore keeps thinking he can play like Overmars, we wont have a hold up man in the line-up.

Feel free to go back a couple years when Ching was getting extensive minutes in qualifying and note how Bradley got crucified for playing Ching. Then note who the people were at the forefront of defending him. You'll notice I'm one of those people.

I was simply calling Sam Hamwich out for his historic pattern of criticizing Bob Bradley for something then turning around and criticizing Bradley for doing to exact opposite.

When called out on it, Sam moved the goalposts and tried to paint me as a Ching hater.

He's a troll. Nothing more. Nothing less.

I've got nothing against Sam, but if you pay attention to his posting habits over time...he does tend to drift with the wind when it works for him and his argument.
