Well this helps confirm some of the rumors that have been floating around about the Chinese players staying back there to prep for the 2003 WWC instead of playing in the league in 2003. We'll see what happens though.

There are several places that the author clearly thinks that 2002 was the first season of WUSA. The author also screwed up the fact that it was Michelle Akers that was co player of the century with Sun Wen, not Mia Hamm. Hope writers don't receive any money for shoddy journalism like this...

That mistake, of course, is inexcusable.

For what it's worth, I can't count how many ignorant sports fans tell me that they recall how Mia Hamm ripped her jersey off after scoring the winning goal in WWC '99, too. ;)

Of course, anybody who follows this sport knows that Akers was co-player of the century and that the likelihood that Hamm would rip off her jersey after scoring a goal is virtually nil.

I think that the WUSA should give the Chinese federation a 'drop-dead' date - either release the players to their teams, or the league should freeze out every Chinese player for the year - that would allow the affected teams time to make plans to play without the players - and give those teams international spots that they could fill...
