Mike Downey wrote two good articles about the lack of mainstream chicago support for the fire. Here's the last one. You need to register but it's free. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/columnists/
Case-sensitive, at that, too... UserID: bigsoccer Password: bigsoccer Works every time. Great piece by Downey, especially liked the picture he painted aboout the pub in Chicago that's a regular watering hole for Fire supporters. There will be a very communal feeling there, especially today.
What's also great is that this is a veteran Chicago sportswriter with a sense of perspective. Usually the old guys can't resist making snide remarks, but Downey knows what's happening. Well done Mike. (Ohmigod, Gingers is gonna be packed now!) Give him a shout at MikeDowney@tribune.com
Finally!! Again!! I've been waiting months for Downy to write about soccer, but it has been worth the wait. If anything, the fact the he wrote with such passion and knowledge about the Fire may indicate a true bias within the Tribune Sports Departement. How so? Are you telling me that Downy didn't want to write about the Fire at any time during their tremendous season or after the Open Cup? Regardless, it is wonderful to see two column in a major paper that doesn't assume everyone is a soccer idiot. For example, how many colums have we all read that started: "Today the Chicago Fire play the San Jose Clash in the championship of soccer. You know that game where they can't touch the ball and hardly score." THANK YOU MIKE!!!!!
Three articles in two weeks, that's pretty good coverage. As the most passionate Fire fans, everyone here should send him an email. I just did.
