do you think there is no middle ground between being wiped off the map and committing genocide — that these are the only options available to Israel? because if there is some middle ground, one where they aren’t destroying Gaza then there is a place where the United States can stop its funding short of financially supporting what has been nearly 12 months of destruction of a people (after decades of apartheid and increasing occupation) and yet the United States can’t even be bothered to publicly condition Israeli military support on a nominal attempt at not committing war crimes — we have funded the bombing of aid workers, of children, of hospitals, and more
The lefty argument, and initially yours seemed pretty similar, has been “I won’t vote for anyone whose first action isn’t to pull all aid from Israel.” I can’t get behind that type of idiocy. Netanyahu’s actions are grotesque and he should be put before a war crimes tribunal. I’ve said that before. He’s not committing genocide though, which is what Israel faces from Hamas, Hesbollah, and Houthis. I shudder to think of what Palestine would look like if he went down that path.
and what if Israel’s treatment of Palestinians before October 7? why is it so important to the United States that we prop up an apartheid government that continually expands its territory among Palestinians while treating them as second-class citizens?
I see zero problem with conditioning any aid to Israel on their behavior toward Palestinians whether it be simply not bombing them, not treating them as second-class citizens, not continually occupying their land, whatever and if the flip side is that neighboring countries will attack Israel then Israel can make the decision to observe basic human rights for this much needed funding
Hamas, Hezbollah, and Houthis. Iran, really. If Israel wanted to attack Palestinians the numbers would be far, far, worse. Palestinians were ********ed over by Hamas and it’s been a downward spiral ever since. Aid would be contingent on Israel pulling out of the illegal settlements in the West Bank, if it were up to me.
I would say oil, but I think it’s deeper than that. The US keeps allies in every region of the world it can to help suppress antagonist nations and to increase the reach of capitalism. Israel hits all three. Oil, antagonistic neighbors, and capitalist markets.
Bumped from the game day thread. I will try to remain respectful. This is not "using anxiety;" it is overt, blatant racism. 1 a) This precise language (eating white people's pets and the local waterfowl) is a racist trope that was used in the 1980's against Vietnamese immigrants in Texas by the KKK and White Nationalists. In both cases, the targeted groups were provided legal status in the US, and were documented (not "illegal immigrants" or, worse, "illegals"- another abhorrent, dehumanizing, racist term). b) It was used against Chinese immigrants in the late 1800's in California and other Western states. 2) This is just another example of Republicans using openly racist and fascist language. a) Trump calling immigrants "vermin" was, once again, the precise language used by the fascists in Germany in the 1920's. b) JD Vance has done it for much of his career. The whole nonsense about a woman's role is to have babies (childless cat ladies) and people with children should have a greater vote, are directly from the 1980-90's white nationalist movement. It is the "14 words" stated by the Republican VP candidate. 3) Show us where any contemporary Democratic Presidential candidate has proffered overt racism like Trump and Vance are. I am sorry, you can vote FOR fascism if you like. That is your Constitutional right, but don't try to justify it by say "both sides" (or, as you say, "of every stripe") do it. That is blatantly untrue.

I just listened to the sentencing of Tina Peters in Colorado who got basically nine years for multiple counts of election fraud and the like. The judge was so harsh and blunt it made even me proud. After announcing a total of nine years in prison the judge bluntly added: “You have two days of pre-sentence confinement credit.” To mention that two days of relief on her nine year sentence was just ice cold. I highly recommend you listen to his full speech. It was glorious. When all was said and done Tina’s lawyer asked that she be let out on bond while she appealed and the judge just responded: “No.”
I saw that yesterday and watched it this morning. It was a terrific summation from the judge and an absolutely appropriate sentence. I expect this will be affirmed on appeal and affirmed if there is an appeal to the Colorado Supreme Court. What happens if her defense attorneys attempt to go to federal court is another story. I would be curious as to the nonsense reasoning her attorneys would invent to get it into federal court. They might claim either a Due Process violation (which would be crap) or an 8th Amendment argument (excessive "bail" or "cruel and unusual punishment"). It would be hysterical to hear them make that case.
We have Chicago Fire, Chicago PD, Chicago Med and whatever else, but Chicago Politics still is the best soap opera around. https://blockclubchicago.org/2024/1...mayor-brandon-johnson-and-ceo-pedro-martinez/
article on how the State Department has ignored human rights abuses to ensure the steady flow of weapons to Israel: https://www.propublica.org/article/...administration-weapons-bombs-state-department
Im on the fence with Johnson myself. Spotshotter is gone, so that’s great, still reading up on this whole CPS thing which is wild. There’s definitely been some rookie mistakes and unforced errors in his first year. The bar is really very low though, so I’m not ready to say I’m disappointed yet. Completely disgusted by the state department, of course, but not in the least bit surprised.
I watched that yesterday as well. The judge was brilliant. I'm the County Clerk down here in Kankakee County. What she did was a complete repudiation of the oath we are sworn to take. The vote is one of our most sacred tasks. She bought in to the Great Lie, hook, line and sinker, all for her self aggrandizement. We are the referees of the process. Whatever our personal opinions may be of the candidates running for any office, we are (or should be) honor bound to protect the integrity of the process. Nine years is adequate, but she should have been charges with treason. She may have the same party designation as I do, but we are not the same.
