Excellent article at ESPN(ESPN+) about peak years and decline rates for soccer players. Big study says peak reached earlier than commonly thought. Also says that “athletic-based” performance declines more quickly than “skill-related”. The study also looked at positional differences. Midfielders peaked earliest at 24-25 years while center backs were latest at 26-27 years. Center backs were also the exception on aging- athletic CBs decline more slowly than skilled ones. Of course, all these findings are overall averages with individual differences. Mentions some teams which seem to be lowering age of their acquisitions due to this aging view.

Do they define if they’re judging peak athletic form or skill form? Over the last 15 years there’s been a shift from skilled players playing tiki-taka to AYSO runningpressing. I’m guessing the “shift” is really just a de-emphasizing of skill in favor of athleticism in the numbers.

One day soon the current adoration of a high press will fall to the next phase of the game. We’re already seeing the “sweeper keeper” to help numbers against a press. De Zerbi is doing a good job of dismantling it as well. In 5 years whatever next solidifies will be emphasized in the “peak” numbers.

    Just a hunch.

It's been said by smarter men than I that about the time a player figures out how to play the game correctly he's too old to play it and watching the television that seems pretty true. However there are times where a young player can be caught out of position and make up for that mistake by hustling back into position where an older player knows where to be and doesn't make as many of those mental mistakes because they have better prediction, positioning and tactical acumen and also can make up for lack of speed by playing one or two touch ball and having better vision. Not that I'm telling you anything you don't know but the thought that a player peaks physically at 25 doesn't surprise me but players peak mentally at 30-35 probably.

If you can, read the article. It explains things much better, much more info. They use EA statistics and supposedly measure overall soccer effectiveness. They mention total number of matches and other contributing factors.

It came out yesterday. It is third article after McKennie article. Sorry. You are dealing with someone who has a $35 flip phone, a 6 year old iPad and little technical knowledge.

It's safe to say your technical knowledge peaked at age 25 or 26 then?

Not really. But lack of interest=lack of effort= lack of progress. I am interested in other areas.

Really! Never would have guessed that when car phones first became popular in the 70s. (Not that I had one.)
