Kind of a crappy birthday present for Elliott. "Happy Birthday, Jack. We sold your central defender partner. Here's a new dude to learn how to play with...for the last 8 matches of the season." Unless, of course, Elliott wanted Teran to go (since Teran only managed to play about 8 matches this season), then it was a good birthday present.
Teran obviously is an awesome locker room dude and has/had a high ceiling but man he was always injured and since his contract was running out next year and someone wanted him and he's currently ACTUALLY healthy (for a minute) and always expressed interest to move on from Chicago, I can see why the Fire decided to move on from him now. I think Cupps is only going to get better with maturity and assume Omar is just here til the end of this season (2025 contract with club option for 2026) so GGG can find another starter level CB during the winter if needed. But as far as Elliot's birthday...yeah...ENJOY dude. I will be interested to see how Waterman does? I really don't know much about him and never really payed attention but certainly never thought Montreal was a "door bolt" of a defense in my mind. We shall see. It's one of my favorites of all time.
My feeling about Waterman and all central defenders is, unless the player is Virgil Van Dijk (just a commanding presence on the field), if you have not paid much attention to him, he is probably doing his job pretty well! I agree that I know almost nothing about Waterman, but we have played Montreal about 10 times with him on the field (more times that Teran has played all season) and if we do not remember seeing him out there, that is probably a good thing. He did pick up a yellow when we played Montreal over the summer.
Per MIR97: "Joel Waterman called to #CanMNT for their friendlies v Romania (9/5) and Wales (9/9). Will mean he will miss #cf97's next game v New England Revolution on September 6. Fire debut will have to come 9/13 v NYCFC (or later)"
Teran fit the paradox of athleticism. So athletic he could do what others couldn’t, and that’s exactly why he was always injured.
maybe. A new theory about injuries? Good that Fire negotiated paying only $150k of Waterman salary for remainder of year. Due to visa issues and Canadian National Team callup, he will only play about 5 matches for the Fire this fall. At $30,000 per match, still no bargain. Equates to $1,000,000+ for a full season.
1) That is only 3 fewer matches than Teran, sadly. 2) His salary was $555,000 for the season, so we are receiving full value for what we are paying (a little over 1/4 of his salary for a little over 1/4 of the season). 3) We will have him for the Playoffs and MLS Cup 2025!!!!! (oh, wait, this is NOT the Optimism Thread. sorry) 4) That is not a far measure of the player's cost. 4A. I don't the "visa issue" is really an issue. He will likely have his visa before playing for us (since we do not have a match this week), even if he was not called up the CMNT. Frankly, I would be surprised if he does not already have it, unless you think he would played in the crapfest on Saturday, which I do not. 4B. That is like saying we are paying Chris Mueller $762,316.00 for zero matches played, so it equates to Infinity (cannot divide by zero) or $25,918,744 for a full season (if he had played in ONE match). That is just not how things really work, but I get the sentiment. 4C. Waterman not being available due to CMNT call up is, quite literally, the "price we pay" for signing full internationals.
Will Carlos Teran go down as one of the biggest "misses" in Chicago Fire history? A guy with obvious talent (and the "ability" for long throw ins, which I do not count as an actual talent, but that's just me), but a guy that in four full seasons, could never be relied upon by the team. In 2020, he played 14 minutes in 2 matches (he joined the Fire in August and made his debut in October) 2021 978 minutes over 13 matches (11 starts) 2022 1676 minutes over 22 matches (19 starts) 2023 1573 minutes over 24 matches (18 starts) 2024 1221 minutes over 18 matches (14 starts) 2025 536 minutes over 8 matches (7 starts)
I know, I know. Just complimenting GGG group that salary was reduced a little and wishing he was available for all the matches. Not really a valid way to look at it.
I am not sure where to put this and I don't think it needs its own thread, but this is pretty interesting. Chicago Fire FC Announces Acquisition of Chicagoland Indoor Soccer League https://www.chicagofirefc.com/news/...quisition-of-chicagoland-indoor-soccer-league An investment in the youth.
I will definitely miss Teran. I feel like this move is slightly backwards, but will wish him well anyway. I thought that Waterman was a hack with Montreal, but now he is our hack so welcome aboard. Just please do not be the yellow card accumulator.
