I don't want to ruin the party, but something more exciting seems to be in place. there seems that would leave the league with 15 teams. well does that seem perfect for a single table with each team playing each other twice. now that is amazing. But as a Fire fan, St. Louis has to be next. the east coast has rivalry potential, texas too, Cali as well. But St. Louis, Chicago, and Kansas City would be amazing to see. I would love to take a train down to see the Fire play St. Louis. But Congrats Philly, New York now has the perfect rival too. I will be honest, rivalries take time to build, in 10 years we will know what teams are rivals. But the potential is really out there.
one of the articles (i'm too lazy to look for it) mentioned there was already a 15th team on the "west coast". not garber's words per se, so take it with a grain of salt. maybe it's seattle or portland that's a shoe-in.
I haven't heard anything from the MLS about that though, I'm wondering if that's more an assumption by Delco than an actual fact/quote. But anyway, this is awesome. I read it in a small article in the Inquirer this morning, completely awesome. I'm glad the investors announced themselves, they seem like a pretty serious bunch and if they're ready to announce their interest, they must have a solid idea of their plans. The December deadline offset me a bit, but I think we can get it done by then. Especially if they continue with the meetings as quickly as they have said.
I would imagine it is Seattle.. I just pray they get a SSS so sick of the gridiron lines. Good luck guys Im pulling for you.
Oh, that changes things then. Maybe Seattle has more of a chance then I thought. Either that, or Portland is gonna come out of nowhere, but I'm doubting that one. Like I said before though, I still think St. Louis has a good chance as well.

Single table is not happening or balanced schedule for that matter. US it too damn big. I'm willing to bet when were at 18 teams the league will return to three conferences (6 per conference - with top 2 from each getting into MLS cup playoffs, like now, and two wildcards). Don't worry, St. Louis will have its day. If they do not sneak in before Philly, then they will be #17 or #18. Philly is too big a market for MLS to ignore. All things being equal between Philly and St Louie, if Philly gets has their cheesesteaks and pretzels in a row, they'll get the nod before the gateway to the west.
As a Crew fan who grew up cheering and booing for all Philadelphia teams (save those jesuit punks from St Joe's, they got no cheers) while growing up in South Jersey I am thrilled with this development. I've begun to worry that the Crew will never win a championship, but with Philadelphia on board I at least know they won't be alone.
Chester is the smaller orange blob in the bottom left and Philadelphia the large orange blob on the right side. As you can see, Chester is in close proximity to South Philly. Downtown Chester is a little over 4 miles or so from the Philadelphia International Airport. The possible stadium location is a little less than 6 miles south of Philly airport. Honestly just a few minutes drive down I-95.
Yeah, a small one. I'm not giving up the Crew though. I've been to more Crew games than any other sports team (season ticket holder for 3 years). Even the Phils are a distant second. I'll be in Philly for every Crew game with a Crew jersey on. But, will it be hard to cheer for Philly against NY or DC? Are you ********in kiddin me? My parents did a decent job of raising me.
here's to hoping y'all get a club! i'd love to make the philly road trip, one of my fav. cities. good luck guys! (much rather y'all get it than St. Louis, even though I think they're confirmed for 2009) ...plus, who could resist tasty kakes and birch beer after a nice pat's cheesesteak.
though to be fair, Detroit isn't really the best comparison because we (former michigan resident here) have no concept of mass transit, really don't have much traffic compared to the east coast, and most of the residents are found north of the city anyway. If I were to build a team for Detroit, I'd put it close to the Palace/Silverdome area. However, Chester is a great location as far as suburban and city access goes. The highways give good access and for those of us who live downtown, we can hop on a train if we schedule it right. I actually flew over the barry bridge last evening from PHL and saw what I'm pretty sure would be the stadium site. The only real location complaint would be that there isn't a whole lot else in the area besides the casino.
I do hope so... even having a buffalo wild wings or two in the area would make a huge difference. (do we even have BW3s out here?)
Regarding the news coverage of the Chester stadium deal: Is anyone noticing that the coverage is in the news sections, not the sports sections? The local newspapers seem to be warning that a MLS team would not be considered sports news. I know from years of working at newspapers how they signal these things. Be prepared to have your team ignored, or handled the way the local papers treat what they consider very minor sports: Regular, ritualized notes about past events; little in the way of advance writing to help people get interested in a coming match. Colorful, descriptive, interesting writing about games and the game itself? Not likely. I'm thinking we should get the thread going early....
Those fans are generally from northern suburbs, meaning they have to travel all the way through the city to get to the stadium. The north shore suburbs are very rich and use to things just being designed for them. They're the same people that never go south of downtown and think a blue collar neighborhood is a 'rough area' despite being perfectly safe. As I said, going from downtown it takes 10 minutes.
Right now its not something that should be in a sports section. It is a proposal to build a major building and add infrastructure to the poorest area of the county. However, it has also been front page news several times and has been the very first thing you see when you open the paper at least twice (in the Delco paper, which has around 171,500 readers daily). If this was buried a few pages back I'd start to be worried, but right now there is nothing to worry about.
