I've just finished compiling a table of all the squad numbers Chelsea FC have used since their introduction in season 1993-94 to date. There's far too much information to allow me to post it on here but you'll be able to see the table if you click the link below... http://www.myfootballfacts.com/Chelsea_Squad_Numbers.html ...I'm sure there might be some corrections which need to be made, so please tell me if you see any. Perhaps you would like to nominate your favourite Chelsea player for every shirt number? Anyway, enjoy your trip down memory lane!
Re: Damn Good List Thanks. To be real, I loved every player that wore #11. #4 I would take Vinny Jones, but Ruud looked good. #9 has to goto Jimmy Floyd. There is only one #25, if you don't know who that was, then you aren't real Chelsea. #20 Frank Sinclair. #16 Roberto DiMatteo. #29 Robert Huth. I could go on & on. Thanks again!!!
1. Petr Cech 2. Branislav Ivanovic 3. Ashley Cole 4. Claude Makelele 5. Michael Essien 6. Marcel Desailly 7. mmm... errr... let's go with Andriy Shevchenko 8. Frank Lampard 9. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink 10. Joe 'Judas' Cole 11. Didier Drogba 12. John Obi Mikel 13. Michel Ballack 14. Graeme Le Saux? 15. Didier Drogba ... alright, I'll put away my bias and select Florent Malouda 18. Yuri Zhirkov 20. Paulo Ferreira 22. Eidur Gudjohnsen 23. Carlo Cudicini 25. Gianfranco Zola 26. John Terry 33. Alex 35. Juliano Belletti 39. Nicolas Anelka I know my team is heavily tilted on the 2000s, but I don't know many of the players prior to last decade.
#11 would be an extremely difficult choice between Wise and Drogba. I'd probably go for Wisey and use Drogs as #15 since that is the number he wore during our first 2 title runs. Carvalho vs Desailly at #6? Titles vs pure talent. I still say Desailly. And man that #7 shirt is cursed. 1 good year of Deschamps and then a succession of total flops - Bogarde, Mutu, Maniche, and Schevchenko. Judas Gallas at #13 over Ballack. Can't forget his role in our first 2 titles - He may have been even more important than JT at the time. Petrescu at #2 clearly over Ivanovic. Don't see many Chelsea legends in #17-21. The best of the bunch being Bridgey, Flo, and Chapi Ferrer.
I received a very nice email from Chelsea's official club historian which complimented me on the squad numbers spreadsheet. He also pointed-out a few typos, which have now been corrected. What a top chap he is!
Hey this is getting to be sorta like that card game of Spades. I trump all of your #15 w/ Mario Melchiot, who IMHO was an excellent servant of the club!!! BTW, Cheers to my 4200 post on BS
Maybe you heard of this guy: Robbie Di Matteo??? Sorry, played for the Blues longer & scored more goals.
