Shalise Manza Young: Stingrays to play Portuguese squad

The Rhode Island Stingrays will host Portuguese second-division club Desportivo Chaves this weekend, playing an exhibition on Sunday, June 8 at 3 p.m. at Pierce Memorial Stadium in East Providence, Rhode Island.

Stingrays coach Mario Pereira said the team wanted another opportunity to promote soccer and bring a foreign team to Rhode Island. He added that it also provides a chance for the Rays players, many of whom are on local college rosters, to see how they compare to professional players, and for Chaves to get a look at the R.I. players.

The game also falls on National Portugal Day, part of a weekend of celebration for those in the Portuguese community.

The Stingrays, 3-1-4, play at New Jersey tomorrow afternoon.

The Portuguese season ended last weekend, and Chaves finished sixth in the 18-team second division, with a 12-11-11 mark.

Last year, the Stingrays played the legendary Portuguese club Benfica, the first time the team had been in Rhode Island.

Tickets will be available at the gate, and will be $15 for adults and $10 for fans under 14.
