Why does it seem our players are always held hostage by teams?

How do you know they weren't low-ball offers?

TBH, it's good for Kelman that these were turned down. Sunderland is always dysfunctional. Going to Spurs would mean years in the reserves and/or on loan.

I'm obviously biased, but Tottenham is a shitty place for a young player to develop. If he keeps scoring at the rate he is, he'll find a Championship team at minimum that's interested and will play him, regardless of what happens to Southend. If he goes to Spurs, he'll probably get stuck in the CCV loan cycle. Players like Harry Kane that can break out of that cycle only come around a couple of times per decade, if that.

    Hopefully Southampton is still interested.

14 points from safety with 13 games remaining, while conceding over 2.5 (!) goals per game.

Southend is very obviously going down (538 has their relegation chances at greater than 99%), but Kelman seems to have done enough to personally avoid the drop. This summer will be exciting for him.

Gooch has played in EPL & Championship & the powers that be have determined we never relegate players once they move to YA.

Somewhat quietly, Kelman has had one of the best seasons for an American striker abroad. Not first choice for the beginning of the season he still led a dire Southend side in scoring, all the more impressive for being 18th on the side in total minutes.

The popular belief is that promotion and relegation in League One will still happen, so Kelman will need to move in order to avoid League Two. Hopefully he finds a spot where he makes an immediate contribution.

If I'm a Championship club I'm taking a flier on him. His long distance goal perked up plenty of initial interest. It will be interesting to see if it culminates in something. Realistically players at the EPL level either go on loan to League One/Championship sides or they stay and play in the new U-23 league. I could see a Premier league team flashing money but for him at this point? I say take playing time every time. It can take awhile to piece it all together though. A guy that comes to mind when I think of Kelman is Cauley Woodrow.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cauley_Woodrow#Career_statistics

Fulham product. Went on loan to Southend when they were in League Two. Gets 7 league goals in 45 league appearances over the next two years at Fulham (in the Championship at age 19-20). Two championship loans of middling success the next two years found him taking a season loan at Barnsley in League One. He gets that move made permanent midway through, bangs out 16 goals and gets them promoted. He scored 14 goals this year for them (including at least one against Fulham).

Comparing the two, I don't think a move up to the championship is something that he needs within the next year. No shame in playing League One for another year or even two. In fact going into this I didn't think there was a case for staying with Southend, but now? I think there is. He's only 18. Stay with the boyhood club, give them a good year get them promoted back and then leave? Not the worst idea.

Then there is the idea of coming back to the MLS. Not the worst idea for Kelman. There would be real growth opportunities for him because the league would be a bit of a challenge. The league is starved for domestic attacking talent and moderate success makes you instantly in the full national team picture (Daniel Lovitz says hello)

agreed with all points. also wanted to reiterate that southend declined bids from tottenham and sunderland on deadline day. west ham was also interested. so teams are definitely aware and fortunately he’ll he have plenty of options.
