Villanova, PA (Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Charge released forward Erin Martin, midfielder Tara Koleski and goalkeeper Maite Zabala on Friday. The team also announced that midfielder Rakel Karvelsson has decided to retire from the Women's United Soccer Association.

WUSA teams had until today (Friday) at 5:00 p.m. (ET) to exercise the contract options on players and reduce its roster to no more than 16 players and no less than 12. On February 24 at 4:00 p.m. (ET), a Waiver Draft will be held. Any player whose option was not exercised will be available to be selected by any team via the draft. The order will be based on each team's finish in the 2002 season and will continue until all eight teams pass on their current pick.

On February 25, a daily Waiver Wire will begin. It will last until all players involved in the Waiver Wire Process are either claimed or become unrestricted. Any player not selected during the Waivers Period may re-enter the league through the tryout process.

Martin had two goals in 2002, scoring both in the Charge's 3-1 win over the Washington Freedom on May 11. In two seasons with Philadelphia, she has three goals and one assist for seven points in 21 games.

Koleski was signed as a free agent at mid-season last year. In six games with the Charge, she had one assist. She had started the year with the San Diego Spirit before being released.

Zabala played in one game in 2002, making four saves in a 2-0 loss to the San Jose CyberRays on July 31. She was acquired by the Charge in the 2001 Postseason Waiver Draft from the Atlanta Beat.

Karvelsson did not see any action in 2002 as she recovered from ACL surgery on her right knee. In 2001, she appeared in 17 games, scoring one goal and recording two assists.

The Charge have exercised the contract rights to Karvelsson. Therefore, if she ever decides to return to the league she will have to re-join the Charge.

The Charge are currently participating in voluntary training camp until March 1, when mandatory camp begins. Philadelphia will play six pre-season games, highlighted by a March 25 contest against the U.S. Under-19 National Team starting at 1 p.m. at Villanova Stadium.

The Charge and reigning league MVP Marinette Pichon begin their 2003 season on Saturday, April 5 in San Jose against Brandi Chastain and the CyberRays. Philadelphia makes its home debut on Saturday, May 3 at 7 p.m. versus Tiffeny Milbrett and the New York Power.
