Time change for tomorrow's game - 3PM, not 1PM as may have been posted at various points. One thing to look for is will it be two halves...or three 30-minute periods. To me, the latter format may suggest Coach K will split goalie duties between Melissa, Hope and Janel in that order. OTOH, he may do like the SDWFC did in their tilt with the Japanese - have Moore out there for 60 minutes and then put in the call to the bullpen. If it's two 45-minute halves, then Moore in the first half, Solo the second. I'll try and poke around so maybe we can get a live report from somebody who will go to this weekend's games. Paul
Some more....[R] Atlanta easily handled Nebraska, 3-0 in their scrimmage tonight. It wasn't a full 90; rather, 3 25-minute periods, so maybe that will be the deal tomorrow afternoon, too. Hooper and Burt scored and assisted on each other's goals, and Antongiovanni converted a PK. Paul
On-site scouting report re: Withers Without directly quoting the PM I got a few minutes ago, she played a right wingback-esque position, had a lot of good runs and not being beaten hardly by the Huskers' penchant for long-ball service. Paul
Nebraska has lost a great deal in Boyd and Latham, and based on seeing them against Yale in the NCAA tournament, they didn't have WUSA quality players after those two. So Paul, why the fascination with Withers?? Why don't you become an Atlanta fan now?? You just make yourself look like a victim too many times. Always the negative from you.... and anyone who even is watching a scoreboard in these friendly affairs should ignore the score line.. what's of interest is formation, who's playing what role, what new experiments are being used. Solo at foward could be a possibility... what's the backline look like... what free agents get PT against the Beat... Since Withers played against Nebraska, i highly doubt she starts against the Charge, but might see some action at the end, when BOTH the Charge and Beat use their benches.,
game cancelled due to inclement weather. i never could quite figure out why anyone would go to Nebraska?? for spring training? but what do i know?
It seemed like a good idea at the time, I guess. In another story on the Huskers website, the temperatures were "not expected to exceed the freezing mark on Saturday, and winds expected to (be) between 15 and 25 MPH throughout the day." 23 degrees at gametime and +7 wind chill isn't exactly a good recipe for quality soccer. http://philadelphiacharge.com/345873.html Paul
Part of this Nebraska stuff was speading the gospel of WUSA. When Nebraska played Yale at Villanova, we had been rooting for Nebraska and there were about 10 or 15 other Husker fans the enxt section over. After the match one of them had come over and was asking our connection to Nebraska, believing we were alumni. We then said we were checking out Latham and Boyd, sort of scouting them for WUSA. The guy had never heard of WUSA. The overall awareness of the league is quite poor, the WMLS reference in the Scasna article being one instance. A road trip, getting players together for 72 or so hours should be good for chemistry, letting players get more intimate with one another. Too bad they weren't here this weekend, the weather was perfect football weather, although a bit breezy today.
The Beat and Charge apparently played on Saturday night and you guys won 2-1: http://www.theatlantabeat.com/346131.html Scoring Summary: ATL – Homare Sawa (Hooper, Bivens) 35’ PHL – Kelly Smith (unassisted) 55’ PHL – Stacey Tullock (unassisted) 75’
Interesting news is Kelly Smith played and scored on the Husker indoor rug... We still need to add Scasna and Hoffmann to the mix, while Pohlers played. Let's see who plays against Maryland.
http://sportsnetwork.com/default.asp?c=sportsnetwork&page=soc-wusa/news/ALN2485623.htm Moore and Solo split time both matches... Monroe still at UCLA?? And Scasna was here last week... No Hoffmann yet...
The surprising part was Monroe still in school. Does she have the final 16 slot already wrapped up?? Is she doing a Tullock and returning in May?? When does the current UCLA school term end??
no clue when UCLA's term ends but id probs think kirk would put her on the injured list with the ankle until shes done with UCLA to avoid holding a roster spot for too long...she is key though with mcdowell and iverson gone.
I don't believe she's really injured. The ploy to put her on the injured list, claiming she's not fully 100% following ankle surgery. She may have Ben Olsen disease, but Monroe played all last year in pain. She's probably the toughest player on the Charge... So I think this is some hide a player on a list move?? Still, I'd rather have Monroe here and playing. But who really knows for sure??
UCLA is a quarter school. Best guess says she is finishing up the second quarter and will be back in a couple of weeks.
thanks to runbabyrun. I couldn't imagine Monroe being away until May like Tullock was last year. There's a lot of roster competition. Squirt just wants to enjoy the LA weather!!
