These guys were driving me crazy in the second half.
Almost immediately following Harris's goal they started talking about the Revo being in the final as a done deal, as well as constant references to the Crew's scoring drought. Then they started in on the Maple controversy. "The kiddies have to come see the Revo in the Cup Final." Folks, the game was far from over. Then Columbus pots two, and these morons wake up and realize we may not make the Final.
I've been watching sports on tv for 30 years and I've never seen such a concerted effort to jinx an outcome.

    I agree..

That was just plain terrible and pretty much hit every possible jinx I've seen.

I'm a little sad that they did this. And what's with the 'own goal' crap? It went of Brown trying to make a save. Definitely NOT an own goal.

It seems like they just make stuff up. I'm very disappointed.

I agree. I know its heresy to criticize Chapman on this board but I was yelling at the screen for them to shut up about a dozen times in the second half. They must have talked about the MAPLE controversy for 10 minutes straight without once describing what's happening in the game.

My biggest problem is that Adrian, who is supposed to be the play by play man, almost never describes what is going on but spends his time babbling with Chapman.

I wish I could just get the sound of the crowd. Who needs annoying announcers to detract from the game.

Oh great, another "lets rip on the commentators thread."

Y'all need to get a life people.

You can't get the sounds of the stadium when it isn't miked people, go complain to FSNE about that.

    What?

We aren't allowed to rip on the commentators?

Come on Evan..those of us unable to attend (yes, I know, I'm committing double heresy by not going to Revs home games and commentating on the commentators) have to put up with this.

It's a sad day when you are beginning to long for Phil and Ty. Very sad, but true.

You would have had no idea that a goal was scored until about 5 seconds after the fact. It was almost as if they were watching the game on tape delay. It was not very good at all.

You know I'm a supporter of Dapper Doug and very happy for him after the whole ProJo fiasco - he had some very good comments about the Mass Soccer league that will still hold games on the day of MLS Cup. However, as far as actual in game commentary and play by play went yesterday, I was a little bummed.

No one. I mean NO ONE would call a game over and tell you to buy tickets for the final in the 48' with a two goal lead. Come on!

Gotta agree. I enjoy Adrian and Doug usually, but yesterday they were driving me CRAZY!! I could not go due to family commitments, so I was reduced to TV viewing.
When Adrian said something to the effect that, "who would have thought that Columbus would come back," we were all screaming..."uh, everybody but you guys!!" What have we all experienced for the last 6 years prior to this "miracle stretch"?? Sheesh.

Can you believe we are in the final?? :)

I did both. I came home and watched the tape, and found Adrian and Doug to be at their worst. I usually enjoy them a lot, but their second half performance was really bad. They assumed the game was over in about the 75th minute.

And that stuff about youth soccer! What a bore.

In light of the fact that the Revs had allowed just three goals in the last nine games, and had four shutouts in the previous five playoff matches, I don't think it was out of hand to for anyone to believe the Crew wouldn't suddenly score 3 goals on us at that point.

Most people wouldn't even know about this controversy - it would just be another thread on Big Soccer that the general public never heard of - so be glad we have announcers who:

    1. Know what's going on in the local soccer community.

    2. Care enough to mention this problem, using their media visibility to educate the fans that follow local soccer as well as MLS.

    3. Are willing to risk making waves in hope that changes will happen that would benefit the local soccer culture.

I haven't even watched the tape yet, but I'm looking forward to it.

(go read the MAPLE v. MLS Cup Final thread)

    Thanks for the update.

Apparently everyone knows it was an own goal except for the official scorer. :)

    I stand corrected.

    2 things:

    1) Calling the game

Why do we need more than one person at the mic when play is going on? There should be a "law of sports broadcasting" that ranks up there with Newton's Law of Motion that can be colloquialized as "the more people you have with access to the mic, the more they will talk to each other and not describe/analyze what's going on."

I'd be perfectly happy to have Adrian call the game solo, and then at halftime have Doug breakdown the game analytically, with a similar recap at the end.

Failling that, how about following this basic rule:

    - When the ball is moving, pxp guy talks

    - When the ball is not moving, the other guy talks

    2) "It's not over til it's over"

I've watched a lot of soccer in different countries and in different languages and there is a phenomenon common in many other places -- but not here. Namely, when a match reaches the last 10 or 15 minutes with one team seemingly comfortably ahead, some announcer will invariably say, we'll it looks like Team A has locked this one up. In many cases, it looks as if the teams on the field sort of believe this too. Call it fatalism, determinism, path dependency, or karma, but it seems much less common here.

The former Dutch coach Rinus Michels once remarked many years ago that "when Americans finally learn to play this game well, there will be one overriding feature that will characterize them, they will never give up."

Maybe Adrian (a UK native) and Doug (a certified Anglophile) have spent too much time watching soccer elsewhere to understand that this "it's all over now (while the game is still on)" mentality is the antithesis of American sport.

And if these guys knew anything about the Crew's performance in the USOC, they were down to KC at home 0:2 with less than 10 minutes left. Not only did they come back to tie it up in normal time, they won the game in OT on a Buddle golden goal.

Looked that way to a few people, so MLS called the pressbox after the match and credited the goal to Washington.

Just to rip on another journalist (Shalise Manza Young, who "replaced" Dapper Doug at the ProJo), I'd like to point out a difference between the web and print copies of the article above. The web version doesn't have headers between the story breaks, but the print copy does. In between the pieces on last night's game and the upcoming championship Ms. Young wrote "Pats will be at full strength." In a way, I hope this isn't a typo because LA will have trouble scoring once Willie McGinnest snaps Ruiz in half.

How many times during the game in the Revolution broadcasts are promotions done for MLS Cup final tickets? It is very possible that they were instructed to promote the hell out of the final once it appeared that the Revolution were going to get there. Then Columbus nearly upset the apple cart.
Doug Chapman covered his remarks by saying things like `if the Revolution hang on ...'
Perhaps they really didn't think the Crew could come back given how well the Revolution were playing defense, or they are not superstitious.
The Maple talk was classic good journalism. Most Revolution fans probably had no idea what is going on with Maple and the MLS Cup final, but the people involved seem very heated about it now that it has been made public maybe something can be done. It is a situation that we should read about in the Globe and the Herald. It is a story that fits what Will McDonough writes about.
Adrian and Doug were very excited about what was happening and given they've lived through all of the bad times, they helped release us from years of pent up frustrations with this team.

ONce again, I had no problem with the commentating. I did think Doug did go on a bit too long about Maple, and they definitely jinxed teh Revs.

I've said it once, I'll say it again. Doug's doing just fine for his first year doing this lind of job.

And I still prefer them over Jack and Ty.
