There are two cheers that I think might be good ones to start doing at US games. The first is along the lines of the "Hey" or "Ole" yell everytime one of our players makes a touch. Instead, we yell "U" than "S" on the next touch, than "A" and so on. I think people would pick up on this one quickly, and it also might have the potential to be one of those precious few cheers that people outside of the supporters' section will actually join in on. Plus, it's a little more creative than just the plain ole USA chant. Also, I'd like to see Sam's Army incorporate the college basketball style bouncing up and down while yelling "OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" method of cheering. It's something that just about all Americans are familiar with from exposure to football and basketball. At the College Cup, UCSB had a student section that took up most of the end line sections at the HDC. On every corner and free kick, the students started bouncing and yelling and it brought an electricity that I've never seen from any other match on tv at the HDC. Since I can't remember seeing any other country's fans do this one, it would be unique to us as well.
Dunno how y'all feel about calling the opposing goaltender a sieve, but I would guess that most college hockey chants would translate very well to soccer. Get a bunch of people in from Madison, Ithaca, Ann Arbor, etc., and they would even know how to do them. I believe there was a small group of college hockey fans doing sieve chants at T&T. In particular, although I generally hate BU, I'm a big fan of the drum cadence they do after goals.
Hartford was my first US game and it was great, but you've got a great point. Every chant involved screaming US or USA. We all know who we are, there's no need to chant USA every 3rd word. Also, why are there almost no player songs/chants? I'm just curious, that's all.
Not to mention Minnesota, Alaska, North Dakota, and even the guys from Omaha aren't bad. As for BU, well they suck but I do like the "GOALIE" (hanging behind their goalie) and "SIEVE" (hanging behind the opposing goalie) banners they use to have
One for Mexico. Brings back great newspaper quote following 2-0 at WC 2002: "It Hurts Right Here" (followed by slapping of the chest)
Ya I love when im watching college football games and the whole stadium goes ohhhhhhhhhhhhh and chants something depending on the team for kickoffs.
First time I heard the sieve chant was at the Joyce. sadly, I've tried it, but it doesn't seem to catch on.
If you've never seen a school that really cares do it, you still haven't seen it. I mean, really, you have maybe 20 people doing it at the JACC? I've seen probably half the crowd (or more) do it for BU at the Beanpot, it was something else. This also goes back to my observation that we could use a fight song, because most of the sieve chants just flow naturally from the end of the fight song.
The "sieve" chant is great at college hockey but I don't think it would catch on with the much more diverse crowd at a soccer game.
i just heard the word 'sieve' in the movie Miracle. funny how things you talk about on Bigsoccer immediatly translate into real life
Speaking of that movie, I discovered on Friday night that it's really fun to watch it at 3 am, drunk off your ass, and screaming obscenities at the foreign players in the movie.
I was listening to Elvis Costello's Get Happy today and I thought the song, "I Can't Stand Up (For Falling Down)" would be a good chant after a dive, changed as follows" You can't stand up for falling down You can't stand up for falling down The dive that you made You acted real bad And that's why we are jeering you oh-oh-ohhh You can't stand up for falling down You can't stand up for falling down Or, just skip the chorus thing and just go with You Can't Stand Up for Falling Down.
This chant is in Spanish, has only two lines, and would 100% wind up the Mexicans into a foaming rage Estados! Unidos! Jamas sera vencidos! "The United States Will never be defeated!" {"J" in jamas pronounced as an "H"} If you are a peacenik or leftist you recognize this from "The People! United! Will never be defeated!" chant It also implies the US will never be defeated... at anything!
Well, then you might have actually had a crowd that meant well (rather than the typical group that sits on their hands until the band tells them to cheer), but I still wouldn't guess that more than about 20 or so were into the sieve chant.
Someone else came up with this long ago: To the Tune of Oh Pilsung Korea (or what we all thought was Ohhh . . . Peace in Korea!) Our words (w/ the way the Red Devils sang it) Recuerden Corea (Ohhhh Pil-sung Corea) Recuerden Corea (Ohhhh Pil-sung Corea) Recuerden Corea (Ohhhh Pil-sung Corea - ends on a higher note) Gana USA (OH OH OH OH OH) U-S-A! (Hey Hey Hey) I think given our magnificent scarves, this song is entirely appropriate.
I'm just wondering why all of our chants seem to be in Spanish? We here in the US, as a whole, are not Spanish-speakers, so why the need to do everything in Spanish just so that our opponents understand? We're not at a peace conference, so who cares if they know what we are saying? Shouldn't that be part of the fun...saying something that they don't understand? Have you ever heard the Mexicans do a chant in English for our benefit?
