Come on guys...can't you think of something more classy than "You Suck"? Sounds terrible and classless....I'm sure you guys can be more creative than that w/o having to use Junior High language like that....It actually is embarrassing. Even though I live in Jacksonville FL now, I was considering joining the supporters group to show my support...but I'm gonna hold off for the time being after that showing....Go ahead lay into me...I just think a little more class goes a long way...Not to mention it was being directed at a goal keeper who blanked us.... Go Revs!! Nate
Nate, Every supporters group in the league uses this taunt as do Sams Army. In fact the Metros Fans add "Ass Hole" onto the end. Its a soccer match not tea time. If you don't like it you don't have to be in the section or join the Riders. I went today and had a great time with them (even though the Revs never showed up for the game).
Well you know, if I had a voice right now, I'd be able to tell you about the other chants and cheers (of which there are many), but the fact of the matter is, the effort would probably be wasted. I'm sorry that not everyone can appreciate nor hear the chanting and singing. I'm sorry some 13,000 fans showed up on a beautiful, sunny Saturday and did anything but. To each is own, and everyone shows their support in their own way whether they stand in The Fort or sit in The Morgue. All you have to be is a Revolution fan... that's it. The Magpie
Never said it was a tea and crumpets party...and I'm well aware that there were other chants and songs used today which sound much better than "You Suck"...Just because everyone else is doing it doesn't make it right...All I'm saying is that it sounds very lame and I'm sure there are more creative taunts that can be used instead that would have the same effect your trying to encite... Go Revs! Nate
Funny how people keep referencing the Riders when in fact they make up an overwhelmingly small number of those fans in The Fort. There's also a good number of Rev Army, and other individuals and small groups of fans that chose to congregate there to stand, chant, sing, etc. The You Suck chant's been around for ages, same can be said for versions of it at other MLS clubs... and trust me, there are some far less savory chants I've heard coming from other MLS groups of fans. It's just a shame that Gillette Stadium has some of the worst acoustics in the league, no matter their multi-million dollar sound system. The sound gets sucked up and so does the atmosphere. Not much that can be done about that. The Magpie
You suck.....no we sucked Good idea to keep cheering that as the other teams keeper has a shut out going against us Has that nonsense ever worked ? It's cute the first time each game....by the tenth time......it's downright annoying
I've got an idea- if you don't like it, start your own chant. Get enough people doing it and you can drown us out.
I'll work on that. But honestly has it EVER caused a keeper to mis-kick ? Should you really be chanting that at a keeper who is shutting your team out ? I could see if he was letting in some truly bad goals, shanking the ball into the stands etc But when we're losing ????
Anyone know about top team's supporters chants from around the world? seems like for most of the 1st division games i can see on cable, the supporters are vocal and certainly have a big repetoire, though rarely can I understand them. I'd so love to take in the "at the game ambiance" of such an event (and hope I will someday). Anyone around here know enough about them to answer these questions: Are they supportive of "their team" or put-downs of the opponent? Are they rude, profane, lewd, or swear words? I personally would never join in such a rude chant. I would certainly work to convince my children not to join in such a chant. I'm hard pressed to think that too many parents hope that their children grow up to lead rude chants at public events. It's so tough to get anything organized; wouldn't it be better to channel such efforts to the positive (ie. a supporters (not detractors) section)? It's a free country (though it seems like we cede many of our rights when we enter Gillette). Do as you may. Unfortunately, the organizers of the supporters section will be leading fringe, instead of mainstream fans. The supporters section will be looked at as part of the pagentry, to be observed, and judged, but never joined. Until leadership for mainstream fans emerge, the "at the game ambiance" will be listening to the players communicate to eachother during the game, with some lower order noise coming from one end of the stadium. (btw, i was quite sure the "you sucks" were directed at the Revs *s*)
Cant we go a season with out a thread on how the Fort's chants suck. To Krafty Jr aka george for someone who hates the Fort you seem to have a lot to say about it.
I don't hate the Fort - I hate the chant Stand up and cheer and wear scarves in 100 degree weather I could care less It's the yelling of 'you suck' when we are getting our butts kicked that I don't like Save it for a day the other teams keeper really is sucking
What I'm guessing the first poster meant was to be creative, not just use "You SUCK!" but to try something better than that. Calm yourselves.
George, I think you're somewhat missing the point if, the assumption is that chanting and singining have to retain some specific, desired result in order to be exercised. That by chanting "you suck" (or anything else for that matter), the goal is to have him shank his kick, etc. Granted, that actually has happend many times in previous matches, but how do we know whether or not that's a result of the keeper simply mishitting the ball, or perhaps due in some part to a lack of concentration influenced by the fan activity behind him? "Hats it EVER caused a keeper to mis-kick?" Maybe, maybe not; you'd really have to ask the keepers or opposing players. But let me tell you this: I had a chance a few years ago to chat with Brad Friedel after a match at Foxboro when he was still playing with the Crew. Throughout the match, in addition to those more common cheers and chants, there were some taunts, antagonisms, etc. from supporters in The Fort. In speaking to him after the match, Friedel talked about that, commenting that such efforts were part of the game, and to paraphrase a bit here, said "I'd rather see and hear that than plan in a stadium where there's no atmosphere or noise from the fans." With respect to Onstad, he really didn't get threatened much, although he did make one or two nice saves, the Revolution and the E-Quakes defense making it a pretty quiet day at the office for him. To address some of johnp's concerns: * Whether you're watching a Premiership match or one in MLS, it's always going to be difficult to understand the chanting and singing if you're not directly involved in it, or just not familiair with the words, etc. * A majority of those chants and songs that emmenate from The Fort, no matter which ones are most clearly heard by the rest of the stadium (and much more easily when it's pretty much empty as was the case on Saturday) are positive. I can think of at least nine, different songs and chants are are entirely positive, encouraging, and supportive of the Revolution. I can think of only two regular ones that could be considered profane or offensive to some degree. Maybe that's two too many, and it's entirely up to the individual fan to chose whether or not to join in or not. * It's entirely fair to suggest such efforts will seemingly be confined to a small "fringe" of supporters rather than the mainstream body of fans. Thankfully, due to the efforts of both the supporters and the club, the interests and sensibilities of each group can be accomodated, the Revs deserving special recgonition this season for their efforts in designating The Fort as a supporters section. The signs at the top of the section indicating the nature of it, the much improved efforts of stadium staff and security, and the flexiblity of fans to move into or out of the section have certainly helped improve the matchday experience. Who knows, perhaps some of those currently residing in the mainstream section will chose to take in a game from The Fort when in the past they might not have had the opportunity to do so. Perhaps those who may want to stand and cheer in some other section, paint their chests etc., now have the flexibility to come into our section to help add to the atmosphere, while removing themselves from a group of fans who may not be especially partial to such efforts. * There will never be leadership for mainstream fans, period. I'd love to see that, but chances are, those who might make the effort to foster some ground-swell of support in those sections will probably end up in ours either by choice or default. I'd offer that proactive, rather than reactive support, isn't something particularly understood or appreciated by the bulk of fans who go to the games... and you have to respect that to a degree. The only times I hear noise coming from the mainstream fans is when the kids, usually youth soccer players with some expanded understanding of the game, take up a chant, usually something as simple as "Re-vo-lu-tion." That's fantastic... I remember how I got chills towards the ends of last season during one of the playoff matches where we could hear the rest of the stadium chanting & singing... even if was only some 6,000 people. That one incident, however rare it may be, completely justifies my going into work several Mondays each year feeling exhausted and having no voice. All that being said and things being equal... There's room enough at Gillette for all fans to show their support for the Revolution in their own way, even those who at times, chose to antagonize or taunt opposing teams. There are going to be some off-color chants, but very few compared to a much larger repertoire of positive ones... and to be honest, that's such a small part of the matchday experience, or being a part or laying claim to some organized group. There's the organizning of away match viewings, trips to out-of-town games, the tailgates... even fundraising for charities including local soccer organizations... ... it's just a shame that some people take one particular chant as the sum total of those efforts of a particualr group of supporters, organized or otherwise. It seems an even bigger shame when some people chose to draw that conclusion without making a determined effort to look past that, to see everything else the fans do... who they are and why they chose to support their team in such fashion. That being said, I'm more than happy to be considered a fringe element at matches, especially when I know that the fringe is just a smaller part of a larger national community of like-minded sccer fans who share similar experiences and sympathies. I can live with that. The Magpie
Believe me I hurl invectives at the other team as much as the next guy It's just when my team is getting its behind handed to them I tend to tone down the rhetoric Fair enough ? I'm not saying don't cheer. Please lose your voice -it's the best part of cheering on your team ! But..........don't tell the other team they suck when it's us that was sucking. Make sense where I'm coming from now ?
You must have missed the boo-down that many in the Fort gave the Revs at the end of the game. I hear what you are saying though nad I will try to be fairminded with my chants. God forbid that a supporter see anything through Red White and Blue glasses and still thing the other team sucks even if they are winning. The most rediculios part about this is that people are complaining about someone saying the word "suck". I mean go to any other sporting event and you will hear much much worse. And Own-Goal-Onstad does suck, even if he made a few paltry saves. Also could you please not say "behind" this is a family site
I think you are missing the whole point of that chant and others. The whole point is to annoy the hell out of the oposition keeper!! I mean, sure the chant isn't all that original, but it does add to the overall effort of annoying the guy!! Look at what happens all over the world, some places actually get into the keepers heads before they even step foot onto the pitch, just because of how brutal the fans get!! That's the whole point of what they are trying to do, and I commend them for adding whatever they can to the atmosphere of the game!!!
just what we need. another thread where people bitch about heckling. just shut up and go to your kid's game if you don't want to hear people heckling.
just so it's clear; i didn't bitch ... really I was bemoaning the large gap between "you suck" and "let's make some noise" (followed by shrill screams from the youngsters) up on the screen. each to his own; we all know the revs, and soccer, can't be choosey about the fans they have ... we've gotta make room for them all!
