Change the nickname ? Hey everybody, I don't know if anybody else is upset by this but here it goes. I love DC United and I love the name of the team and even the great colors. My problem is that I am not on board with this nickname thing-the Black and Red. Let me make it clear, It just doesn't do anything for me. I mean really, it seems like every team in the league has the same nickname, the Red and Black (for the Metros), the Black and Blue (for the Rapids), the Men in Red (for the Fire) although the Fire one isn't as bad as the first two! Now while I am all in favor of a nickaname, does it have to be concerning the color of the team's Uniforms? Then again, is there much of the color red in our uniforms anyway? Maybe on our away Uniforms, but even then, it is just a touch of it. Believe me, Red is my favorite color, If DCU wanted to go to an all red away strip, that would be fine with me-at least then it would be justified in calling the team Black and Red! (I know, I quess the team did wear a red strip for some games last year-although I never saw it!) I mean, even if they wanted to give it the nickname of "the Eagles" (or something like that) than I could see that, there is an eagle in the shield and that would make sense, also, this way if DCU ever wanted to change their colors (God, I hope they never do that) than they wouldn't have to worry about the changing of their nickname as well. All I am saying/asking is can we please get a nickname that has something to do with the team and yet at the same time original? Come on people, let me know what you think?
dc united has started to move our colors around also.. note alot of the new logos and text are black and grey or black and white.. I would rather just be red.... Or at least have all the supporters in Red...
imagine our shirts being replicas of Newcastle? no thank you... i would rather either keep black and red and make someone else change but DC never seems to get what they want.
I was always rather fond of "Champions" or "Campeones (sp?)"...but alas that too has gone by the way side...
Re: Change the nickname ? I have to agree with you. It is something that has been iritating me for a long time. The uniform colors are black and white. Where did the black and red nickname come from? There is some red in the team crest and on the fans clubs banners, but not on the uniform. If the nickname is to infer the team colors then it has to be black and white not something the fan clubs made up at one time. If you want the nickname to be black and red that is up to you, but it would be nice to have the nickname have some resemblance to the team colors on the field.
Who actually uses Black and Red as a nickname, anyway? I always thought it was something contrived by MLS and DC United press releases and web articles.
Change the nickname ? I don't think it's us that should change the our nickname? It's the other teams ( Scum, and the Crapids) that can't make up there minds. Year one what color where the Metro? Black and White and Gold. The Following Year the change to OUR Red and Black. Now for the Crapids. They Change there colors more times than a man with the runs changes his underwear. So Shouldn't Change our Names but if we did I like " Eagles" Pepe
This is going to be a no win situation for me, I know you guys going to criticize me, but here it goes team name---------- nickname colorado ---------- the rapids dallas---------------the burn kansas city ---------the wiz wdc-----------------united and so on, well you see in the US of A the nicknames are in the team name as compared how is done in Europe. I am in favor of team names as Oklahoma City Footbal Club, and Houston Soccer Club for example, then they could have their own nicknames otherwise your pretty much stuck with silly names or two nicknames
Is this what the traditionalists have found to complain about now that we have gotten rid of the shootout, and that the clock counts the "proper" direction, and now the time is kept on the field? Get a life.... Do some ballet stuffing or something. James
Change the nickname ? How abotu the crappers, DC jouknighted (after that useless RFK announcer), has beens. Oh jeezz...forgot to take my tranquilizers again
I actually like the nickname "Black and Red." It's a sports tradition, particularly in soccer. I definately prefer our current designation of "Black and Red" rather than the Dallas Burn designation of "Red and Black." Our color is black, everything else is trim. If we were to change from "Black and Red" I'd prefer that we simply be "Black" or maybe even "Black and Silver"--as opposed to the Oakland Raiders "Silver and Black." -Digital
Black Knights But, if you want an identifiable name that both suits our team and is different from all the rest, might I suggest the nickname "Black Knights." Obviously, it's a pun on United/Knight, and the black clearly is our identifying color. Plus, there is an ominous quality that instills fear into opponents with the proverbial epitome of an adversary, the black knight. Much like Kevin Payne's masterpiece of "DC United" identifying us as the capital of the US, sounding like a soccer team, and differentiating us from the myriad other "Washington TeamName" designations, this nickname has several layers. You may think it's dorky, but I kinda like my suggested nickname "Black Knights." -Digital
What about: "Men in Black with white stripes on their chests, with an adidas logo, a really neat black and red eagle logo, and three gold stars!" On second thought, maybe that is not so catchy...
Change the nickname ? black eagles? The 'Marco Etcheverry is not indicative of this team's general effort' eagles? the all blacks? The Dc Expos? Ooops. the senator-bullets.
