This is probably common knowledge, but I looked it up anyway. So, in case anyone else is interested or unsure, the following is from www.premierleague.com:

Question for the historians here: when was the last time the English top division championship was determined by playoff?

Never(that I know of). In fact I believe that the tie breaker has ever gone to goals scored once, in 89.

A quick peek at my 2002-2003 News of the World Football Annual shows Huddersfield Town ('23-'24), Portsmouth ('49-'50), Arsenal ('52-'53), and Manchester United ('64-'65) won League title tiebreakers on goal average.

I'd rather see 'em play off right away to break a tie, like they do in baseball.
