    D1 Final [R]

UConn in with a 2-0 win over FSU. Talk about a game of inches.

Their dance partner will be decided in little more than two hours.

    Julius,
A generic "D1 Final" thread had been created yesterday afternoon to avoid giving away the results of the semifinals in the title of the thread. Why not use that???

UNC will win easily, 3-0. Cat Reddick, in her last collegiate game, finished with a goal. Tarpley has one, and O'Reilly.

If this scenario does happen...it this year's UNC team the greatest since Mia's.

UNC up early, 1-0. Pretty easy tap in from a nicely driven ball across the goal mouth.

Tarpley was the goal scorer for UNC.

    2-0, UNC.

Pretty much the same thing from the other side. O'Reilly, I think was the goal scorer.

    Not looking good for UConn.

I'll have to look at the tape, but I think that there should have been an offside call prior to the second UNC goal. The player on the right wing came back to the ball from an offside position to win the ball and pass to O'Reilly (who then got the assist).

Great ball movement leading up to that 2nd goal.

There's your 3, c-24. O'Reilly sneaks in a shot from the left, near post.

And two minutes later they make it 4 off a Tomecka header from a corner kick. Assist to Maggie, goal from Tarpley's foot.

5-0 on a scramble from another corner kick. O'Reilly gets the last foot on it.

The right back for UConn is being tortured.

The official scorer has given credit for goal #4 to Tomecka.

    No PK for Ramsey.

I think the referee is feeling sorry for UConn. :)

A dominating performance by UNC. O'Reilly and Reddick named ofensive and defensive MVPs.

And the announcer says that the final was 5-0. :( So math isn't her strong suit. ;)

Probably the best women's collegiate team ever. No goals allowed all tournament. Unbelievable.

The Heels are simply the best

Congratulations to the Tar Heels, simply the best team.

As far as the final goes, what did you expect?

No offense to UCONN, because there aren't 5 teams in the country that can play with UNC, and the NCAA seeded all the teams that might be able to play with UNC in one half of the draw.

The final was destined to be a blow-out. The criticism of this year's draw, as harsh as it has been, has been too mild. It's not so much the committee that's flawed, but the process. The process needs a complete overhaul.

On the other hand, UNC was going to win no matter how the tournament was seeded.

I did some checking on the Jones ratings from previous years (going back to 1995).

The number of teams within 300 ratings points of the #1 team have, in the 3 previous years, been 18, 12 and 17. This year there were only 3 teams within 300 points of UNC, and they were all eliminated before the final.

In 2002 the top 5 teams were within 100 ratings points of each other. In 2001, UNC and Santa Clara wound up only 53 ratings points apart. In '95 Notre Dame, Portland and UNC were within 200 ratings points. Florida, winners in 1998, ended up rated 250 points below UNC.

UCONN's rating was almost 500 points below UNC's. I don't recall when a team rated 500 points lower than their opponent has won.

    Boring

...which is why the NCAA finals are so boring. What is fun about a 6-0 game? 18 out of 22 championships? And Anson Dorrance has the gall to say there is parity?????????? Give me a break. Until there is parity, women's soccer will be a niche sport.

    Re: Boring

Why don't you go climb back under the rock with the SCU and Portland fans who like to claim nothing but "the dynasty is dead." Good grief. People just like to have something to complain about. It couldn't be that UNC just turned up their game a notch this year, could it? It couldn't be that they have an extremely talented group of girls this year, could it? 'Cause it sure seemed that the previous two championships were extremely close and weren't won by UNC...

If UConn would have won, do you suppose there would have been a single Tar Heel fan saying anything but congratulations to them?

Believe me if women's soccer remains nothing but a niche sport and it does so without the likes of classless fans like you, the real fan base will be most happy and appreciative.

Hey, as someone who normally does not watch too much women's soccer, I can honestly say I enjoyed it alot. Definitely a contrast in two styles and I thought a couple of times that UConn got behind the Tarheel defense early in the first half only to be whistled for an offsides. A call or two go the other way and it could have been a different game.

That second half was just dominant though.
