OK folks, the draw is out. Group A: Barcelona Inter Milan Bayer Leverkusen Newcastle Group B: Valencia Arsenal AS Roma Ajax Group C: Real Madrid AC Milan Borussia Dortmund Lokomotiv Moscow Group D: Manchester United Juventus La Coruña FC Basel ________________________ And may the discussion begin.....
I hope we get Valencia away first. By the time we travel to Arsenal and Roma I should have enough dough to make the trip
And after the group shuffle..... here's how the groups look..... == Group A == Inter Milan Bayer Leverkusen Barcelona Newcastle == Group B == Ajax AS Roma Arsenal Valencia == Group C == Borussia Dortmund AC Milan Real Madrid Lokomotiv Moscow == Group D == Juventus FC Basel Manchester United La Coruña Now for the fixtures......
26 nov Valencia AJAX 10 dec AJAX roma 18 feb AJAX- Arsenal 25 feb Arsenal- AJAX 11 maart AJAX valencia 18 maart roma - AJAX Don't know about the rest though.
Wow. Now I'm almost wishing they weren't going to get rid of this phase. This is going to be very, very intersting... I have a feeling that Barcelona and Depor won't get out of it alive, but I don't know enough to make more predictions.
.Pretty good group for Madrid, which they should come out of if they regain their form in time .I think Depor's chances are still pretty good, especially now that Valeron will be returning to the team .Damn, the only way the draw could have been worse for Ajax was if Roma was replaced by AC Milan
again...ManUre gets the easiest draw... I'll be going to London and Rome to see the Roma and Arsensal matches vs Ajax. Real better play 1000 times better than they did in the first stage if they hope to advance again. They've looked like crap thusfar.
Matchday 7 This is how things are going to start out.... Tuesday, 26th November Group C AC Milan vs Real Madrid Lokomotiv Moscow vs Borussia Dortmund Group D FC Basel vs Manchester United La Coruña vs Juventus Wednesday, 27th November Group A Bayer Leverkusen vs Barcelona Newcastle vs Inter Milan Group B AS Roma vs Arsenal Valencia vs Ajax
Ajax is able to beat Roma home and away. But if they will.... I doubt it. Same goes for Arsenal but I guess that depends on their form mostly. Valencia? I don't think so. But this is a great learning experience for our players and ofcourse some fantastic matches and trips so I don't think anyone's complaining in A'dam. I expect nothing, but there's always hope.
I think you'll find the fixtures for 18 and 25 of Feb are reversed.... ie no two home games on the trot.... so you'll travel to Highbury before Bergkamp drives to Holland The home game is on Wednesday, 26th February.
Really, this are four superb groups. The TV stations, who now are complaining about having too many games and less TV ratings because of that, will complain next year after the knockout stage of the last 16. Cause this time we'll have almost all games very interesting and cause giant TV ratings - maybe except Moscow and Basel with all due respect for their performances - and next year the knockout stage delivers some pretty average duels (face it, the top teams will be excluded from meeting each other that early) and the good ratings won't start before the quarter finals.
Yeah well. I don't know exactly how they're going to do it next year but I think after the group phase we should get a regular draw with no limitations of any kind. Then I'll be happy.
Correcting Ajax Fixtures.... Wednesday, 27th November Valencia vs Ajax Tuesday, 10th December Ajax vs AS Roma Tuesday, 18th February Arsenal vs Ajax Wednesday, 26th February Ajax vs Arsenal Tuesday, 11th March Ajax vs Valencia Wednesday, 19th March AS Roma vs Ajax
Question for those who have been around the CL longer than I have... I know this is the first time that Lok Moscow made the 2nd Group Phase. It seems to me that it's going to be pretty tough to go play in Moscow in November and February. Have other clubs playing in such hostile winter weather made it to the second round before? Dynamo Kiev or Spartak Moscow or any teams from the Scandanavian countries? If so, do they generally have a VERY strong advantage over their opponents. I would guess that Dortmund would be at least somewhat used to winter weather, but what can you expect from Milan when they travel to Moscow in February? or from Madrid in March -- it could still be nasty in Moscow then too.
I don't remember any of those teams making it into the second round, but I don't follow CL if Ajax doesn't play in it so I might be wrong here.
Dynamo Kiev did well a few years ago making it to the semi final. Yes, the harsh conditions do make a difference as does the rock solid playing surface. Watch out for pony Italian boys wearing gloves!!
The groups look good don't they. With a Spanish, Italian and German or English Team in each group there will be lots of great games. No club is assured of qualifying, not even Madrid. If anything, group B is the hardest only because Ajax are the best team from the fourth seeded pot. I can't see any team getting more than 10 points. 2 home wins and 2 away draws should be enough to get through.
I KNEW Manure was going to get Basel...nothing changes with UEFA...watch as the scum draw the others but win the 2 against the swiss cheese to move on. You heard it here first.
