Champions League: Do we root for or against ManUre?

OK, here's what I'm thinking. On the one hand I might want to pull for ManUre, simply to keep them occupied on another front. More chance for distraction, fatigue, bookings, and (minor) injuries. But if they actually do advance past Real, they'd have a great comeback win on their resume, and they might then go on to actually win the Champs League, and even if we won the Double-Double the ManUre-loving press would probably never let it drop.

But on the other hand, how much pressure would they be under if they got knocked out tomorrow, knowing that their only chance for any silverware in the last two seasons was by winning the league? Honestly, on the Tight Sphinct-o-Meter scale, that's got to rate about a pure 10.0 (Turning Coal into Diamonds).

So I'm going to be rooting hard and fast for Real Madrid to hold on to that two-goal advantage and knock the dirty Mancs out of the Champs League. And then, when we win the league on goal difference and beat Southampton in the FA Cup, this season will have been just as sweet as last season for us, and just as big a bust for Sir Red Nose and Merchandise United.

You think that's a tough one, what do we do this weekend when ManU plays Spurs?

For me, I'm rooting big time for Spurs.

As the Metallica song goes, "Sad, but true." I think we all might need to go through a cleansing after the game though.

Frankly I can't even believe that there is a question in anybody's mind about this.

We want Madrid to stuff 'em!!

The media are just starting to shut up about the Red Menace's Champions Cup theft in '99. All we need is for that to happen again, I don't know if I could handle it.

Who cares what they do in the league from now on, they're in good form anyway and don't look like losing to any of the crap teams they'll be playing and as long as AFC keeps winning than it doesn't matter if they win every match anyway we'll still (most likely) be champions. Naturally it would be nice if they slipped up but you can never count on anything in this life.

And as for Spurs helping out by taking some points at the weekend, yeah right. I'll still be rooting for a draw though! :D

Two points lost for both teams.

The only thing we can rely on right now is the Arsenal players not other teams slipping up or something.

    We just have to believe.

In fact from now until the end of the season or the mathematical elimination of Arsenal from the title race that will be the closing line of all my posts (admittedly not many these days).

    Believe.

Thank you! Not to be viewed as a troll in here or anything, but I can't believe the question was even asked. This is the ONE area where your club and mine (the Northwest Reds) should be in 100% agreement. The Scum need to go silverless.

Easy. I never said it was a choice of actually winning the Champions League, just whether or not we want them distracted. They'd still have to win two very tough games before they won any silverware, so keeping them alive for another game doesn't guarantee anything.

Rooting for Sp*rs is no problem for me. We've already talked about this ad nauseum, but they're more pathetic than hated, at least to many non-English Gunners, including me.

And Senor, I'm swiping your tag line and putting it my sig. If it was good enough for the '73 Mets, it's good enough for us!

The knee jerk reaction says root for Madrid. The more calculated and considerate response tells me to root for Madrid also.

    And I HATE Madrid.

ManU are playing on top of their game right now, no question about that. What it's going to take for them to come down to planet earth is being tossed out of the CL on their home ground. In essence, to be relegated to spectators when the final comes back to Old Trafford.

I'm happy they'll be playing without Scholes. He's been the lynchpin of their recent good form. I think having to shuffle the squad around his absence will naturally upset their rhythm. Soccer is a game of confidence and right now ManU have a lot of it. That could change after tomorrow.

As a fan of the Blaugrana, it's tough for me to root for Real. But I'm a Gooner before I'm a Barça fan, and I despise ManUre alot more, so I will root (hesitantly) for Real.

I will be rooting for England and English football. So it happens to be ManUtd and thats all right. Sick, I know, but I read that in the CL country over domestic hatred. I wont be wearing the ManUtd hat though as I got rid of it long ago. LOL

As for the ManUTd game and Spurs. A draw is two points lost and preferable in this case.

Arsenal is no longer in the competition - so I really don't care! May bad things happen to all the current teams involved! Like 22 broken legs in each game and 22 red cards that carry life long bans! :)

Real Madrid is Real Madrid, the best club of the history. Manchester United needs much more than winnig this CL to reach the actual WORLD club Champion:Real Madrid.
Whatever happens the Red Devils will go-to-hell

This is what I'm hoping happens today (Wednesday) and Sunday:

    1) Real wins 1-0 in the match and 4-1 on aggregate. After the match, Fergie blows his top, turns purple and kicks another boot, which cracks Ole Gunnar Solskjaer right in the nose, then richochets and hits Roy Keane in the jewels. David Beckham has a severe flashback and, while running out of the locker room, runs smack into a post and knocks himself out. When he awakens, he finds he's on a flight back to Madrid, dressed in a Real warmup suit.

    2) On Sunday, the game gets extremely rough. So rough, in fact, that Sp*rs and ManUre square off in a massive brawl, but in a "West Side Story" way. In the end, all 22 players receive red cards, and the match is reduced to a BS contest between Sir Alex and Glenn Hoddle. Hoddle wins when he claims that Tottenham still have a shot at Europe and could compete for a Champions League place next season. Tottenham is awarded all three points. Fergie, in a rage, kicks another boot, which ricochets off a wall and ends up hitting him in the face. The FA, in their continuing effort to make certain that ManUre is happy, suspend the boot for the rest of the season for "intentional violent conduct".

Totally agree, there is a question of wider loyalty involved for some of us. I will admit a cup of tea tastes sweeter after stuffing it to ManUre, Spurs or the Pool, but I don't get my rocks off as an Arsenal fan by "hating" the opposition. I get my rocks of by us being better. ManUre are a great club, let them be as good as they've ever been, but let us be better!

Furthermore, it is impossible to tell how ManUre will react after the Real game, look what they did to Newcastle! If they get knocked out all that's left is the Premiership? As for Spurs getting a result, do me a favour! Was it 2000 when we needed them to get a result against ManUre last game of the season?

Even though I despise both teams, I wanted Real to win going into it, just to shut up Fergie. Now that the game is over, I'm completely satisfied: United are going home, even though they won, and there was some great goal scoring. I cant stand how Real can buy the best players every year, but daaaaaaaamn are they fun to watch!

And if it was ever in doubt, I think Sir Alex secured the Jackass of the Year award today by not starting Beckham and then watching him score two goals in 40 min. Good call Alex!!

last game of the 98-99 season. Scum went up 1 - 0 after 20 some odd minutes only to be beaten 2 - 1. I don't expect any more of them this time.

All in all, it was a good day

Sir Red Nose gets killed in the Telegraph:
    http://www.sport.telegraph.co.uk/sport/main.jhtml?xml=/sport/2003/04/24/sfgman24.xml

    The Beckham-to-Real link gets stronger:
    http://www.sport.telegraph.co.uk/sport/main.jhtml?xml=/sport/2003/04/24/sfnhay24.xml

And folks on the ManUre board are whining about "classless" Real Madrid fans coming into their forum and gloating about the result.

Well Man United may have won the match but Real beat them in every way, shape and form.

United, as ever, got a lucky goal at the end to win. For what good it did them!

Ferguson should be getting reamed in the press. What the heck is that 4-5-1 formation anyway? He's trying to be a bit too clever there. That may work against some teams from Israel or Kreblakistan but not a real team which is what they faced in Real Madrid.

Yes Dan, all in all a very good day. :)

I couldn't believe Fergie would hold Beckham out again today either. I thought the whole purpose of not playing him against Arsenal last week was to rest him for Real. My hope is that this creates a rift in the ManUre dressing room, since it's obvious that Beckham's in Fergie's doghouse.

And the Mancs shouldn't complain about people trolling. They're the ones who showed up on our boards after a DRAW.
