So, where does Rooney rank right now in terms of all-time great club albatrosses? Gerrard was obviously poor last season but it's not like Liverpool were overflowing with alternatives. Raul faded pretty badly at the end of his Madrid tenure but he was clever enough that his bottom level was never as appallingly low as Rooney's. I genuinely think Rooney may take the cake here, at least as far I can remember. Club captain, huge wages, commercial face of the club, playing in a crucial position on the pitch, consistently awful performances and more than able alternatives - I can't think of anyone who ticked all those boxes.
People on the MUFC board thought £30mil was too much money for him. He's worth almost double that. He's a press buster. He cannot be pressed into losing the ball, no matter what.
He's unbelievable in that regard, isn't he? His performance against Spain in Euro 2012 is hands down the best midfield performance I ever saw against that suffocating Barca/Spain midfield. It should be required viewing for every young central midfielder everywhere.
