So I hate plastic CD packaging. I invariably drop the damn thing and it cracks or someone sits on it and it cracks.

I find the paper packaging so much better and easier to deal with. No cracking. Harder to fit into preexisting "CD cases" sometimes, but still, just easier to deal with.

Why isn't it all shrinkwrapped paper? Is the paper packaging more expensive? Do people just like those breakable CD packages?

I'm a great dad. Just last month I brought the girls a Molotov CD, which they love. Unfortunately, now they call me "********" and they tell their mom to "chinga tu madre".

I've always wondered why people have a problem with CD jewel boxes. Right off the bat, they protect the contents. If they crack, they can be replaced. And they make storage very easy.

I find I have to be more careful with paper or cardboard packaging since they can be so easily damaged, bent, or worn. I can't stand cardboard packaging.

I've bought plenty of CDs on Ebay. Many times they've come with cracked jewel cases, but the contents have been in perfect shape. It's the plastic jewel boxes which have protected the CD and the booklet from harm through the mail. Replace the case and everything's as good as new.

Give me plastic jewel boxes every time.

By the way, plastic or paper packaging will be ruined if we leave our stuff where some jerk can sit on it, so that is NOT a defect of jewel boxes nor a reason to knock them.

Reason #10 why I prefer the iTunes Music Store.

Yeah, a big waste. I'll tell you another big waste. DVD packaging. They should come the same way a CD does. Small and compact. The disc and a little booklet about the movie. In a jewel box.

I hate the carboard packaging. Harder to fit into CD cases, they wear out easier. They can't be replaced. It is a sleeve and not one with the little thing that goes through the middle, its easy to scratch the CDs. Evil evil evil cardboard. My list of reasons to hate them could go on and on, but it isn't gonig to. Suffice it to say I hate them. I hate them enough that I've actually considered writing letters to record labels begging them to stop.

Take em out of the jewel case and keep em clean. reduces the need for those horrible towers. a good choice unless you're the type that needs the booklet everytime you listen to the cd.

I do not like the paper cases Yes, you can put more into your cd spaces, but they wear out, rip, and do not offer nearly as much protection to your discs as the jewel cases do. Brazilectro 4, a cd I often listened to came in a paper case and it was a double disc set. It's basically falling apart now. Same with another cd case that's a single disc - the glue keeping the plastic disc holder weakened and it's now useless - except I superglued it back together. Then with Brazilectro 5, they somewhat went away with it but kept it more of a laminated book feel - but the blasted plastic holder inside doesn't hold the cd tight, so sometimes the CD slips out of the jacket!!

Also, heaven forbid you're a beach freak like me and take music with you. If you have a paper cd case, rest assured sand will sneak in and sand kills your discs. I'm not a fan of case-logic or any of those sorts of cd carrying cases/holders. They dont offer that much protection either. I've had many of them ruined by the simple sliding of the cd out of the sleeves - you get streaks on them and over time tht wears on the discs.

Without a doubt I'm extremely anal-retentive about my collection. My music is even scheduled out to its full value on my H.O. insurance. While the paper-backs allow me to fit more discs into a given section of my holders, those are always the cases that are ruined first... not to mention that you cannot just replace them and take them apart like jewel cases. If one of those cracks or breaks, you can always replace it whereas the paper cases are usually painted on.

--A lot of paperbacks are starting to come to you with an extra protective covering or extra lamination. That's good, but I stll prefer the jewel case. And the obvious alternative is, if you can, download your music to a hard drive so you can just copy your tunes onto other cheap re-writes, etc. That's what I've done so I don't tarnish the originals.

OMAN - I almost forgot - you are a Bebel Gilberto fan, right? Her new cd is out on June 8th! :) I put some stuff out about it on the Brazil thread. You can already find it on Amazon.com and www.sixdegreesrecords.com.

Alex, you're an icon of anal-retentiveness. I mean that with the utmost respect. :)

I was going to say, don't knock him on that, I do the same thing! I've been reorganizing my CD collection for 3 or 4 days now and it'll probably take 2 or 3 more to finish!

I prefer the cardboard packaging. I don't know why but I do.

On a side issue, why are so many indie label CDs marked "Made in Canada" while you never see that on major label releases. Is there a CD printing firm in Canada that only caters to smaller labels or do the majors contractually require them to not put the sticker on the CD. Just curious.

I don't know, but I'm sure its cheaper to get stuff made up there and you wouldn't have to incur massive shipping charges to get them or probably enormous duties.

A lot of classical CDs are pressed in the Netherlands.

I like the paper one with the plastic holders inside. Jewel boxes are so damn hard to open sometimes. I see my no plea for a replacement disc I posted last night. The kid broke the plastic jewel case for one disc in my brand, new 4 disc set.
